Firewood: * by Erin Hynes, Ex tension Adviser, Agriculture, McHenry County As the popularity of wood burning stoves and fireplaces in creases, so does the cost of firewood. To get the most heat for your money, follow these suggestions: -Shop Around. Prices vary greatly among suppliers. See if local municipalities or ar- boirifcts sell dead or diseased wood from parkways. This wood . usually must be burned during the current season. State forests sometimes permit wood cutting and collection. Call them for in- formation on permits and procedures. - Know Quantities. Wood is often sold by the cord, a stack 4 ft. x 4 ft. x 8 ft., which equals about 100 cubic feet of actual wood. A rick, or face cord, is sixteen ihches wide, and is one third of a standard cord. A facp cord of mixed wood weighs about a ton. Buying wood by the truckload is imprecise - specify the weight or number of cords you expect per truckload. - Barn Seasoned Hardwood. Allow cut and split woods to dry for several months to a year before burning. This seasoning process decreases the moisture in the wood-making it give off more heat per pound of wood. Hard- • woods, such as oak, beech, or apple burn more slowly and give more heat than soft woods such as willow, pine, birch, or poplar. - Store Wood Well. Store wood in neat loose piles off the ground and away from buildings,. Stack wood with the split side down. Use plastic sheeting to protect the wood from rain and snow. Wood will deteriorate more slowly in sunlight than shade. Use the wood within one year to minimize insect and disease problems. Extra Flavor Add extra protein and flavor to hot chili; sprinkle with shredded cheese and corn chips.
