DECEMBER 22. lf*» Warren Hands Skyhawks 4th Straight NWSC Loss 1 BARBANSELL *• JOHNSBURG -- The Johnsburg Skyhawks continued to have trouble securing their first conference victory 'as the Warren Bluedevils dropped the ^Skyhawks 74-60 Friday night. This leaves the 'Hawks with a Northwest Suburban Conference record of 0-4, but an overall record of "3-4 goiftg* into the Northern Illinois Classic Tournament this week in ^Hampshire. ' Johnsburg's Coach Ben Beck felt his team was out of rhythm throughout the first half. "We settled into the game, missing more than half of the free throw opportunties we had," not to mention shooting a weak 40 percent from the floor. j The Hawks saw Warren leap to an 'early five point lead in the first ^quarter. With just over three minutes Yemaining in the quarter Tom Meehan capitalized on a shooting foul, sinking both free throws to bring the "Skyhawks back into the action, '^arrowing Warren's lead 10-7. Then "\vith more than two minutes left, a 'free throw shot by Jeff Preston tied the game at ll-ll, but Warren's Kent iwema came up with two field goals in the last 30 seconds to take the 15-11 lead entering the second quarter. ^ The problems began to multiply for Johnsburg in the second quarter. Warren sent Dave Lidstrom in at center and he promptly went to work sinking five consecutive field goals. This increased the Bluedevils lead to 25-15 early in the quarter. With three minutes remaining in the half, Preston picked off a pass and drove the ball down court to Jeff Fowler for the bucket making the score 31-21. However, Johnsburg committed •five costly turnovers which only aided jWarren's 80 percent shooting average 'during the secQtid quarter. Warren managed to sink 10 out of 12 field goals and four out of five charity tosses boosting them to a 39-27 lead. i Beck felt the 'Hawks were in timidated by Warren and it brought (heir shooing accuracy down. "It was •also the first time we've been beaten this bad on rebounds. "We've had a tough schedule playing the top three teams in our first four conference games. But I'm happy with our progress and with our continued hard work we^will still improve. "Fowler has been real steady for the team, while Meehan, Majercik and John Wharton contributed a lot too," added Beck. , # Fowler led the Skyhawk scoring with 18 points, while Meehan added 14 and Preston contributed 11 poii}ts._ The Skyhawks came to UreTn the third quarter and they bounded themselves back into the' game. With almost six minutes remaining, the Bluedevils had missed two shots and Warren's guard Ozzie Larsen had come up with the rebound and was resetting the offense when Skyhawk Joe Majercik stole a pass sending the ball to Fowled who made good on a. three point ptay closing the Bluedevils advantage to 39-36. Again the 'Hawks forced a Bluedevil turnover when Johnsburg's Meehan blocked a shot and Majercik came through on the offensive rebound making it 42-38. Meehan added two free-throws on the next 'Hawks possession giving Warren only a two point lead 42-40. However, two points was as close the Skyhawks could get. Three tur novers and Warren's offensive rebounding in the final two minutes squandered the Skyhawks opportunity to tie the game. Warren had come back to close out the third quarter with a substantial six point margin 50- 44. Beck praised his team's third quarter efforts. "They are a group of guys who don't say die. They work hard and their Johnsburg pride showed tonight." Warren extended their lead as Lidstrom blew the game open on two key three point plays. Johnsburg's Fowler, on a pass from Majercik, completed successful three point play with a minute left to play. However, it was not enough to close the gap (Continued on pogo 7) Surrounded by Woodstock defenders, McHenry Warrior center, Marie Peterson scored on this jump shot in the first quarter. Blue Streak guards, Greg Bradshaw and Mark Rigby surround him and Brad Hotter looks on. LA-Z-DOY Warriors Edge Streaks To Share FVC Lead MIKE LAMB Ken Ludwig let it be known his McHenry Warrior basketball team is for real and are contenders in the Fox Valley Conference. Ludwig made his proclamation after watching his Warriors run with the rival Woodstock Blue Streaks and come out the victors 65-59 Friday. The Warriors are now 3-0 in the FVC, while Woodstock fell to 1-2. The Warriors are now tied for the top spot in the FVC with Jacobs, winners against Crystal Lake South. "We are now 3-0 in the conference and we're going to be tough now," said Ludwig. "The players right now are 200 percent sure they can play with anybody. We do still have a few individuals who still don't believe in themselves. This team is going to be in all the ball games." The Warrior defense shut down the Blue Streaks top scorer, Jamie Ericksen. fte only sewed eight points, but Woodstock's other forward, Brad Hutter, picked up the slack with 21 points -- 14 points in the first half. The Warriors were led in scoring by Randy Lively with 17 points and Gary Freund scored 15. "I think the difference of the ball game is we missed a lot of layups," said Woodstock Coach Gordie Tebo. "If we would have made those layups we would been even with them or ahead." Woodstock look a quick lead in the first quarter at 8-4. The Warriors came back and tied the game at 10-10 and both team were off and running. Both teams coming into the game were noted for their quickness and running game style and both teams lived up to the reputation early. The Warriors took the lead for the first time at 14-12, but both teams played even through the quarter and the it ended 20-20. It was the second quarter when the Warriors made the move to overtake (he Blue Streaks and outscored Woodstock 5-1 in the early going. When the quarter was over, McHenry was the owner of a seven point lead, 38-31. The first half was very fast pace and Ludwig was happy with his team's play, but he did point out some mistakes. "I told our players to fast break. When ihe opportunity was their -- push the ball up the floor, but if there wasn't an opportunity, then walk the ball down. "They (Woodstock) would shoot and miss and we would get the rebound and bring the ball down, but then throw the ball away. I counted eight bad passes in the first half. They (Warriors) did handle the press well." The Warriors continued to hold the slim seven point edge though most of the third quarter. They did manage to raise the lead to nine points, but a Ericksen jump shot at the buzzer made the score 48-41 after three quarters. - With only one quarter to go, the Blue Streaks made their attempt to make a charge at the Warriors. A free throw by Jeff Harris and a basket by Mark Rigby cut the Warrior lead at 48-44. Freund got the Warrior offense going again with two free throws. The Warriors continued to hold off the Blue Streak charge, holding a 58-50 lead with two minutes left in the game. "At one time we were down by only four points and had the ball. Bift every time we made a move, thew made a key basket," said Tebo. "I think McHenry played a real good ball game. I didn't think they would be as patient as they were on offense." Lively scored nine of his 17 points in the last quarter, including six free throws during the last two minutes. The Blue Streaks in a desperate situation fouled the Warriors con tinuously and the Warriors kept their slim lead right to the end shooting free throws.
