HOW and WHY'of LUNAR ECLIPSES PAGE 17-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY.DECEMBER 29, 1982 be seen only in a small part of the world, but a total lunar eclipse can bt- seen from anywhere on earth where it is night while the eclipse is going on'. courtesy of The Adler Planetarium The last total eclipse of the moon visible in this area for nearly seven years will occur in the early morning hours Thursday, Dec. 30. Not until Aug. 16,1989, will another total lunar eclipse be visible in the Midwest. Beginning at 2:45 a.m., Thursday, the Adler Planetarium and the Chicago Astronomical society will present a special Eclipse Watch program on the plaza, west of the Planetarium, where telescopes will be set up for public observing of this "last eclipse." While the moon is totally eclipsed there will be a special presenation of the Planetarium's traditional holiday Sky show, "Star of Wonder", at 5:05 a.m. and beginning at 6 a.m., break fast will be available in the Planetarium snack bar. According to Adler Planetarium Astronomer Larry Ciupik, the first phase of the eclipse will begin at 2: 52 a.m. and the final phase will end at 8:06 a.m. The moon will be totally eclipsed for 61 minutes, from 4:58 a.m. until 5:59 a.m. All phases of the eclipse will be visible in Chicago until just before sunrise at 7:17 a.m. Ciupik is predicting that the totally eclipsed moon will probably be unusually dark "and eerie looking" because the atmosphere still contains ash from the eruption of the El Chichon volcano in Mexico nine months ago. What he finds especially intriguing is the similarity between the up coming eclipse and an eclipse which occurred 19 years ago. "This eclipse promises to be very much like the famous 'dark eclipse' of Dec. 30, 1963. The times of the two eclipses are almost identical and the moon's position above the horizon will be very nearly the same. But the greatest coincidence bet ween the two is that in 1963 and now, in 1982, a major volcanic eruption took place nine months before the eclipse." One difference between the two eclipses is the length of time the moon will be totally eclipsed. In 1963 the moon was totally eclipsed for 79 minutes but this year totality will last for only 61 minutes. The first phase of the eclipse will begin at 2:52 a.m. but the moon will not look very different from normal until 3:50 a.m., when it begins to enter the darkest part of the earth's shadow. Ciupik's advice to novice observers is to start looking for a "a darkening on the eastern edge of the moon, at about 3:45. As the moon continues to move into the shadow of the earth you Moon will notice that the shape of the moon seems to change from a full circle to a lopsided circle." At 4:58 a.m., the moon will be totally within the dark shadow of the earth and it will remain totally eclipsed until 5f59. Ciupik expects the moon to remain dimly visible "but dark rusty gray and murky looking" throughout the total phase. As the total phase ends the moon will begin its emergence from the dark shadow. The eastern edge will appear to be brighter by 6 a.m. and by 7:07 the entire moon will appear "normal" again even though the final phase of the clipse won't end until after sunrise. For people who are not able to get to the Planetarium, Ciupik suggests using binoculars for observing the clipse. "Even though the clipse will be visible with the naked eye, a pair of SAFETY HINTS Jim Edgar Winter driving calls for patience, knowledge and skill on the part of every motorist. The following safe driving practices will help reduce the dangers of driving in winter: 1--As conditions deteriorate, reduce your speed accordingly. TTiere is no safe driving speed on snow or ice. Be especially careful when' you come upon a bridge, overpass or Underpass. 2--If you have a rear- wheel drive vehicle, use snow tires and-or chains on your rear wheels. Snow treads improve traction, both starting and stopping.. Tire chains are effective in ice and snow. Many hardware stores sell .portable chains* for emergencies. Snow tires and chains will not, however, allow you to drive on slick roads at normal speeds. 3--Keep your win dows clear. Don't start driving until the wind shield is defrosted and clean, and snow and ice is completely removed from all other windows. 4--Get the feel of the road. Start very slowly and test your brakes to determine how much traction you can expect from your tires. Start slowing down well before coming to an intersection, turn or stop. As Ciupik explains it, in order for a total eclipse of the moon to occur the sun, earth and moon must be in a direct line with one another, with the earth between the sun and the moon. A lunar eclipse can only occur when the moon is full, because that is the only time in its orbit around the earth that the moon comes into a position opposite the sun. Although it migth seem that there should be a lunar eclipse at every full moon, that is not the case. Ciupik explains, "the path of the moon as it revolves around the earth is at about a five degree angle to the path the earth takes around the sun. During each month the two paths intersect at only two points, called 'nodes'. "For a total lunar eclipse the moon must be near one of the nodes so it will pass through the shadow of the earth. If it isn't near one of these points of intersection, the shadow will be either above or below the moon and there will be no eclipse. "By contrast, a solar eclipse can only occur during the new moon phase, when the moon is between the sun and the earth. During a total eclipse of the sun, the moon comes between the sun and the earth, hiding the sun and casting the shadow of the moon on the earth." A particular total solar eclipse can The last total eclipse visible from Chicago occurred July 5. 1982. Talks and reports were given by Ernie Demers on the club's Com munity Service project assisting FISH at Thanksgiving, and "Snowmobile Safety"; Marsha Demers gave a talk on "Winter Safety in the Home". Members were encouraged to give talks or demonstrations on Nutrition for the January meeting. Since Jeff Piattt was absent for the last time, he received his one-year pin, achievement seal and fair premium at this meeting. It was discussed and voted on to hold the Insect Seekers' meetings on the third Saturday of each month. The meeting was followed by Christmas carolling and a pot-luck dinner.
