Operation Snowball Moves Ahead HOSPITAL NOTES / INDOOR PLANTS FOR NEW YEAR The home doesn't need to look so bare when all the holiday decorations are taken down. Get some greenery with an indoor plant. the good choices\ are the dracaenV, Chinese evergreen >or rubber plant. These do not require too rnuch light, which means you can use them in almost any room you choose. You can get these plants from your local florist in clay pots for easy care. They need to be watered regularly, but not excessively. Keep them in the clay pots. The porous walls e v a p o r a t e e x c e s s moisture into the air, providing insurance against overwatering. ' Operation Snowball, a statewide, teenage organization, has moved into McHenry and is rolling forward at full speed. ' Snowball was founded on the belief that, given accurate information and a basic understanding of oneself, every person has the capacity to make sound decisions regarding his or her own life, particularly with regard to alcohol and drug abuse and other mental health matters. Operation Snowball seeks: to disseminate accurate information regarding all aspects of alcoholism and drug abuse; to aid in the student's ability to distinguish between at titudes and facts regarding drug abuse and alcoholism; to develop a greater trust and openness between teens and their parents; and to en courage its participants to contribute their time and efforts to their com munities to help with adolescent problems. The McHenry and Johnsburg High School Operation Snowball groups held a meeting Sunday, Dec. 12, at East campus for the purpose of in forming the students' parents about Snowball. Member , Sara Lambourn, described what the organization is, what its goals are, and the activities planned to meet these goals. Illinois Senator Jack Schaffer and Rep. Dick Klemm were invited to the meeting to present House Joint Resolution No. 48, adopted by the Improve 'Flat' Mail Sorting Postal workers have been sorting large envelopes, circulars and magazines manually in pigeonholes ever since the U.S. Postal Service was founded more than 200 years ago. That antiquated system is going to be largely discontinued as a result of successful testing of a sorting machine for "flat" mail at the North Suburban Management Sectional Center in River Grove. Frank J. Santoro, manager of the North Suburban facility, said 238 Multi-Position Flat Sorting machines (FSM 775) have been ordered for postal facilities nationwide, and the first of three scheduled for delivery at North Suburban has just been in stalled. "Our four FSM 775s will be sorting most flat mail for our 108 associate post offices as well as for all post officesf, Except Chicago, in the nor thern jha]) of Illinois," he said. Santoro compared the introduction of the FSM 775 to the first purchase of the Multi-Positicfct Letter Sorting machine some 20 years ago. The MPLSMs revolutionized the sorting of First Class letter mail in the same manner as the FSM 775 is expected to do for flats, he said. He said the FSM 775s are being purchased for $47.2 million. Each machine^fincluding installation, will have a fStal cost of about $200,000. Santoro defined flats as mail with a minimum measurement of 6" by 7Vfe ", a maximum of HVs" by 15", and a thickness of no more than V. He said the FSM 775 is 12 feet wide, 82 feet long and about four feet high. A maximum crew of seven operate it. House of Representatives and con' curred in by the Senate. Rep. Klemm read this resolution to recognize Operation Snowball and all its member groups and to commend them for their statewide efforts as a community ->f caring youth. Senator Schaffer addressed the group em phasizing the need for prevention and stating that it is a key fac. >r in cur bing drug and alcohol abuse and other community problems. Following the presentation, these prominent public officials par ticipated in the meeting with the parents. Each meeting is planned by the young people of Johnsburg and McHenry high schools and is open to any high school student interested in personal growth and community service.
