* PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER 29, 1W2 EARL WALSH So I Hear the time has come again for NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS. The best thing I should and could do would be to look up all the resolutions made through the years and repeat them. Most of them are slightly used. Let's see now. As old '82 fades away and '83 looms over the horizon, f. I RESOLVE To either have the waist of my pants let' out or my stomach taken in. To take a memory course to help remember names. To endure what can't be cured. Jo study our calorie book as soon as I can find time. to learn some new jokes. To visit Wrigley Field next summer. It lias been so long--. Not to let the temptation to mow the lawn get the best of me. Grass looks greener now than it did last summer. To get a goat to keep the grass down next summer. It will save wear and tear on the mower -- and on me! To say something nice to my friend and Saturday lunch partner, Arnold Rauen. I try. Not to mention such things as Bill Funk practicing his golf swing in front of Larry's barber shop on Riverside Drive --without a club or ball. (You ain' swing. lin't got a thing if you ain't got that swing.) to live long enough Chicago World Series. to see an Ail- To join Dick Rabbitt at a Warrior basketball game. (After attending games for 65 years, I faded out last year.) Not to go horseback riding. To say something nice about Cub fans. (I'll do it if it takes all year.) To write a snappy letter to that aow who sent me a sure cure for dness. Not to wear a hearing aid in the shower nor try to dry it over a toaster. (Since our granddaughter Aleen laughingly told half the world, I might as well tell the other half.) ' Not to let my mind wander during a sermon. To get started right away to find something to put in another column. It will be the last one for 1982. Now, here are some more serious New Year thoughts that appeared in S.I.H. many years ago: PROMISE YOURSELF To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make your friends feel that there is something good in them. SL To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. \ To think only of the best, to work only for the best and expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about yourself. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the; improvement of yourself that y have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. Home Energy Assistance The Lake County Community Ac tion project has been designated the local administering agency for the 1983 Illinois Home Energy Assistance program. The purpose of IHEAP is to assist with a one-time payment for heating cost for low income families. Another portion of the program assists eligible families whose utilities are disconnected. The program will open in Lake County Jan. 3. The main office, 107 East Water street, Waukegan, will accept applications from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and thereafter Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Applications will only be accepted from the first 100 applicants per day. The Round Lake office at Avon Community Service organization, 1316 Cedar Lake road, will be open the same hours, but only the first 50 ap plicants will be served. . The Johnsburg high school leadership team, during its fall meetings, has thoroughly discussed the impact of this course on the entire curriculum and the particular student group it is intended to serve. The investigation that was un dertaken before this course was designed indicated that there was enough interest to justify offering at least one semester of a survey course. The course has been designed as a valuable adjunct to such courses as Building Trades, Automotive and Machine Shop. Students who have plans for further educational training after Johnsburg high school also will find it to their advantage as an in troduction to the area before they might leave for Lake county or a technical career. As it ,i%presently conceived, the course wm be open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors and will stress both theory and practical ex perimental work. Since it will present electrical theory from a scientific point of view, it will also fulfill one semester of the science requirement.' A full presentation of the plans for this program as well as all possible curriculum changes for '83-84 will be made to the Johnsburg school board in January. State Police Boost Patrol The National Safety Council is predicting that 600 to 800 people will die on highways of the country by the completion of the two holiday weekends. A sad note to this needless tragedy is that according to a National High way Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) study, it is estimated that alcohol is now involved in up to 55 percent of all highway fatalities. This new percentage is up from the previous estimate of 50 percent. A number of reasons can be stated as to why this is up, but the underlying fact is that alcohol abuse and driving are on the increase. To combat this problem, the Illinois State police will have extra patrols out during the holiday time period. Ac cording to Captain Richard L. WASSAIL BOWL IS ENGLISH TRADITION The modern practice of "drinking a toast" to welcome the New Year is derived from many ancient customs. The Anglo-Saxon "wassail" bowl stems from an early favorite - English ale, to which were added beaten eggs and a custardy mixture flavored with nutmeg and sugar. Pieces of toast were added to the mixture as special taste treats. The original wassail mixture didn't pack the punch of today's concoctions, which are sometimes laced heavily with brandy or whiskey.
