J. SERVICE NEWS Two Complete Basic Army Reserve Pvt. Leslie B. Warp, daughter of Ulmer B. and Barbara L. Warp of 5212 Bridge Street, McHenry, has completed basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. During the training, students received instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, first aid, and Army history and traditions. Ms. Warp is a 1981 graduate of Johnsburg high school. Airman William T. King, son of William E. and Bonnie L. King of 7404 Coventry drive, Spring Grove has been assigned to Chanute Air Force base, 111., after completing Air Force basic training. During the six weeks at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree in applied science through the Community college of the Air Force. The airman will now receive specialized instruction in the flight training equipment field. Bronow In Peace Keeping Marine Cpl. Steven M. Bronow, son of Patricia A. and Harold E. Bronow, Sr., of 1403 N. Beach road, McHenry, is serving as a member of the in ternational peace keeping force in Lebanon. He is a member of 2nd Assault Amphibious battalion, 24th Marine Amphibious unit (MAU), Camp Lejeune, N.C. In conjunction with Lebanese Ar my, French and Italian troops, ap proximately 1,200 Marines of the 1,800 Recruit Ends For Seaman Recruit JOHN D. PETERSEN Navy Seaman Recruit John D. Petersen of 3609 W. Anne street, McHenry, has completed recruit training at the Naval Training center, Great Lakes. During the eight-week training cycle, trainees studied general military subjects designed to prepare them for further acatiemic and on-the- job training in one of the Navy's 85 basic occupational fields. Included in their studies were seamanship, close order drill, Naval history, and first aid. Personnel who complete this course of instructions are eligible for three hours of college credit in Physical Education and Hygiene. After completing his basic training, John has been assigned to fleet duty in San Diego, Calif. John is a 1982 graduate of the McHenry Alternative high school. Assigned To Texas Base Airman Frank W. Martin, III, son of Frank W. Martin of 4608 N. Fox lane, McHenry, and Elaine Perry of Poplar Grove, have been assigned to Shep- pard Air Force base, Texas, after completing Air Force basic training. During the six weeks at Lackland Promoted To Cadet Airman member 24th MAU began patrolling East Beirut. The 24th MAU relieved the 32nd MAU of peacekeeping efforts in early November. The 32nd MAU had been ordered to the war-torn nation in June to participate in the evacuation of American citizens and foreign nationals. The 32nd MAU returned to Lebanon, in August to supervise the evacuation of the PLO, and in Sep tember as part of the multi-national peacekeeping force. CADET WADE CEPULIS Cadet Wade Cepulis, son of Edmund Cepulis of 6511 Round Up road, McHenry, has recently been promoted to the grade of Cadet Air man in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC)) of the University of Illinois. His promotion is the result of a selection process that promotes only the most capable cadets in AFROTC of the University of Illinois. Cadet Cepulis is a 1982 graduate of McHenry high school, is now a fresh man majoring in Psychology. As an AFROTC cadet, he is a full time student working on his bachelor's degree. In addition to his regular college curriculum, he takes an Air Force Aerospace Studies course each semester. The course teaches Air Fofte history, leadership and management, and national defense policy. " After graduation, Cadet Cepulis will be commissioned as a second lieutenant and enter active duty as an Air Force officer. Promoted Michael R. McClory, son of Sandy S. McClory of 4316 N. Wilmot road, McHenry, has been promoted in the U.S. Air Force to the rank of airman first class. McClory is a vehicle mechanic at England Air Force Base, La., with the 23rd Transportation squadron. He is a 1980 graduate of Johnsburg high school. Reserve Cohon Completes Course Army Reserve Pvt. Lawrence D. Kohon, son of Lawrence and Mary C. Kohon of 3705 Fillmore, McHenry, has completed the UH-1 helicopter repair course at the U.S. Army Aviation school, Fort Rucker, Ala. The course is designed to provide enlisted personnel with a working knowledge in organizational, direct and general support maintenance on the UH-1 helicopter. Personnel are trained in the duties of crew chief and record keeper. He is a 1982 graduate of Johnsburg high school Outstanding Rank To Staff Sergeant Staff Sgt. Mary M. Lehrman, daughter of Charles L. Pyles of 812 Wiltshire, McHenry, has been named outstanding non-commissioned officer of the quarter for the 316th Aerial Port squadron at Yokota Air base, Japan. The sergeant was selected for professional skill, duty performance and exemplary behavior. AT FORT LEWIS Pfc. Kenneth D. Hensel, son of Wayne and Cheryl Hensel of 313 W. Burr, McHenry, has arrived for duty at Fort Lewis, Wash. Hensel, an ar tillery repairer with the 9th Infantry division, was previously assigned in Hanau, West Germany. Perhaps the principal reason behind the majority opinion may be found in the fact that McHenry this year was assured that the less fortunate citizens were amply provided for. The G.P.C. of the high school held a Christmas party at the high school. There was a tree with Santa present to distribute the gifts. Games and dancing furnished entertainment, after which lunch was served. Dr. P.A. Schwabe, an optometrist from Woodstock, announced the opening of an office in the Pries building on Elm street. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 17, 1942) The West McHenry State bank has paid out in recent weeks the amount of $10,000 in Christmas savings funds. In a letter to Santa Claus, Alan Freund asks Santa to please bring him the truck in Vycital's catalogue on Page 9 and the three wooden trucks." I wouldn't mind if you brought the shovel too." It has been the general opinion for some time now that enlistments in any branch of the service are permitted no longer. Word has come this week that the Navy will accept enlistments for another six weeks. There were 222 in favor and 9 against its establishment. Mesdames Charles Gibbs, A.D, Foley, Ray McGee, John Bolger and Miss Nellie Doherty attended a meeting of Delta Kappa Gamma at the home of Mrs. Florence Colby in Crystal Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Justen returned to their home in Chowchilla, Calif., after spending a few weeks with relatives in this vicinity. They were accompanied home by Miss Norma Whiting of Grayslake, who will , spend a vacation there. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 20, 1972) Terry Riley and Kasey Anderson, the latter of McHenry, of Marian Central Catholic high school attended a conference on student views at East Bay, Lake Bloomington, 111. Topics discussed were Student Rights, Birth Control, Race, Environment, Drugs and Systems and Reforms. Terry is president of Marian Central Student ' Council and Kasey is secretary. Also at the district convention, Kasey was , elected secretary of the Northwest district of the Illinois Association of Student Councils. . The McHenry Drama class will ' present a play, the final outcome of this class' semester work. "John Brown's Body" has been selected for this presentation.
