Meyers, will be retiring Dec. 31 from the McHenry County Sheriff's department after serving more than 40 years in law enforcement. Meyers started as a guard in the state penitentiary in 1942 and a year later joined the Woodstock Police department as a patrolman, rising through the ranks over 22 years to reach the position of police chief. He was chief of police in Woodstock when it became "All-America City" in 1964. He retired as chief in 1965 and returned to the state prison as a guard for 2Vi2_years. In 1967, Meyers joined the sheriff's police as a patrolman under Sheriff John Carroll and was promoted to sergeant in 1969, serving as shift commander. When Sheriff Art Tyrrell took office in 1970 and created a safety education division, he selected Meyers as head of that division, a position he has held for 13 years. A year later, Meyers was also made commander of the sheriff's marine division. "On Dec. 31 I'll be ending a good, long and happy career in law en forcement," he said. Meyers said Nulle has tried to persuade him to stay on the job. "But at 70, I'm ready to move on to other things. " F o r t y y e a r s o f p o l i c e w o r k wouldn't have been possible for me if I hadn't worked in such a good com munity and county. They've been good people and I've had the total support of my family, friends, residents and colleagues," Meyers said. When he first was a policeman, Meyers said, the officers just patroled beats on foot, "but with the shift in" population, the police have a bigger area to cover." Looking back on his law en forcement career, Meyers reminisced about the job. "Years ago, we could settle cases on the spot. But with all the changes and new laws, a policeman can't do it that way now. "The legal wfirk and paperwork is excessive now. In earlier days, we could take someone swiftly in front of a magistrate. Now, the court dockets are crowded and there's so much red tape," Meyers said. Meyers served in the U.S. Navy for three years during World War II, after serving for four years with Company F of the Illinois Reserve Militia. He was first aid county chairman for the American Red Cross for 25 years, teaching thousands of people. He still does that at schools and factories in his capacity as safety officer. As for the future, Meyers is a candidate for the Woodstock City Council. HOSPITAL NOTES WOODSTOCK Admissions: George Gutzman of Wonder Lake and Mrs. Dessie Lundell of Ringwood.
