Listed among the contractors are Althoff Industries for plumbing, heating, ventilation, and fire protection; Carey Electrical Con tractors for electric; William Tonyan and Sons, Inc. for asphalt paving; Alliance for concrete curbing; and Rebars and Steel for reinforcing steel. Local suppliers include Enterprise Ready-Mix Company, Inc., for con crete material, and Alexander Lumber for lumber supplies. The years teach much which the days never know. -R.W. Emerson. In keeping with the holiday season, Peg R. Blaser, director of the Illinois Department on Aging, has extended recognition to the thousands of volunteers who have helped provide services to older persons in Illinois during the pasf year. "Volunteers have become an in valuable resource to aging programs in Illinois. Without their , help, we could not begin to offer the com prehensive network of services now available to older persons," said Blaser. - 1 According to a recent report issued by the Illinois Office of Volunteer Citizen Participation, there are more volunteers working in aging programs than in any other branch of state government services. "With the aid of volunteers, it is •possible to serve meals to more than 2*8,000 seniors each day through nutrition projects located throughoi * the state. Volunteers are also involved in senior center support programs, such as transportation, outreach, health screening and telephone reassurance," Blaser said. "Most of the volunteers working with aging programs are seniors themselves. They may be recruited by local community groups, or they may be enrolled in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), which is part of ACTION, the Federal Agency for Volunteer Service." Blaser added that volunteers have also become an important part of the "•Department on Aging's Nursing Home Visitor program. Under this program trained volunteers make friendly visits to nursing home residents who do not have visitors. In addition^ the volunteers may identify and attempt to resolve minor con cerns or problems mentioned by the residents.
