PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, JANUARY 21, 1983 A Showdown In Algonquin The Warriors of Ken Ludwig are in what we would call a showdown game this weekend with the Jacobs Golden Eagles. To stay in contention for the Fox Valley title, the Warriors imist win this game, or fall behind the pack. The Crystal Lake South Gators of Gary Collins host their cross town rivals Central in "Gator Alley." On paper and from seeing both teams this season, the nod should go to the Gators. However, the same Gators last season were on a 24 game winning streak, having defeated the Tigers in regular season play twice, and fell by the wayside in regional play. Ken Slimco, coach of the Golden Eagles, is wary of the Warriors. Looking down memory lane, we will see the Warriors knocked the Eagles out of the championship back in the first year of the Fox Valley Conference. Coach Marty Sobczak and his "Rassling Warriors" ran into a buzz saw last Friday night and came up on the shof t end of the score with Crown. Tonight, they host Jacobs with a record of 1-4 in conference. Crotf'n and Woodstock are the teams to beat in the F\)x Valley. At present, both are undefeated in conference matches. The "Lady Warriors" of Pat^Wirtz play two home games this week. Last night they hosted Cary-Grove and tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. host the Blue Streaks of Woodstock. One of these days the girls athletic teams are going to turn it all around and will be contenders in all sports in the Fox Valley, the question I always ask is why are the Warriors and the Blue Streaks of Woodstock always looking up to the rest of the teams in the conference? Surely we have enough girls to compete with the Crystal Lake Schools and the Dundee schools. What is the problem? Likewise, I attended the Warrior swimming meet with Woodstock the other night. The Warriors lost the meet in the last event of the evening. However, there were only a few Warriors competing. With an excellent pool at West Campus, plus a beautiful pool for On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbitt swimming at Knox Park, only a few, and 1 mean a few go out for swimming at the high school level. Coach Mike Shanahan is recognized by his fellow high school coaches as a good one. Why can't he get enough swimmers to compete on a satisfactory level? All Shanahan needs is numbers to participate and he will do the rest. The prep basketball standings for "the weekend are listed and naturally Quincy, my wife's school, is rated number one again. The ZeeBees are rated 20th and the Warriors played them a good second half last Saturday night. Ludwig was most pleased with lys. Warriors last weekend. He commented, "we need to improve on our shot selection and get the killer instinct." As I have mentioned before, the Warriors are interesting team to watch. They dotnake mistakes, but we all do-that in course of our lives. Would suggest you fans who haven't attended a game to try it once -- you won't be disappointed. ******** Memory lane again, it is the first year of the Fox Valley and the Golden Eagles of Jacobs have a one game lead over Jim Hinkle's Crown Vikings when they visit Buckner Gym Jn McHenry. In the fipst meeting of the schools, the Eagles won 69-63, but at home the Warriors have different ideas for the Eagles The Warriors, behind the outside shooting of Len Jensen and Tony Sroka, along with Brett Thomas inside play, pull an, upset and defeat the Eagles 63-53. John Bradslhaw<t)f the Eagles, who scored 25 points in the ooener, was held to a mere six points. The logs dropped the Eagles into tie with Crown at The Warriors finished with a 6-8 recorc McHerfry 63 Jacobs 53 McHenry: Johnson 2-2 6. T. Zeller 3-1 7, Jensen 8-0 16, Sroka 4-7 15, B. SHAW MEDIA NEWS SERVICE ^ DICK PETERSON HARVARD -- The semi-pro Red Devil football team ap parently has found a home for the 1985 summer season -- Harvard High School's Dan Home Field. Superintendent Robert Cassidy an; nounced Tuesday at the Harvard ^District 50 School Board meeting that tentative approval had been given for the Red Devils to play seven games at Dan Home Field on a one-year trial basis. Cassidy said the t e n t a t i v e a d ministrative decision is pending a written contract between District 50 and the franchise, the Red Devil Football Club Inc., a nonprofit organization headed by Bill Downs of rural Hebron. The District 50 board does not vote on the matter. The Northern States Football League, which the Red Devils compete in, approved the Har vard location for the franchise Sunday, Downs said this mor ning. Downs said the team will be called the McHenry County Red Devils. Under the tentative agreement, the Red Devils will rent the field for $400 per games. Seven home games would be held. The organization also will pay for custodial fees and crowd control, and provide a cer tificate <fi insurance. Liquor would not be allowed, Cassidy said. Home games would be played Saturday nights in July and August so as noi^to conflict with (arvard High School activities. District 50 activities would take precedence over Red Devil activities, Cassidy added. Doy/ns said the fran chise was in agreement wfth the tentative stipulations. The Northern States "Football League team severed \ll ties with Delavan, Wis., last fall. Downs had expressed dissatisfaction with with playing conditions at Delavan's Veterans Park and continually was stymied in a bid to secure a Wisconsin high school field as a home. The Red Devils hosted a regular season game at Dan Home Field last summer. Although attendence was not as high as Downs had hoped, he was en couraged. Marian Central High School had expressed interest in the Red Devils playing their home games at George Harding Field, but Marian Central officials decided against the p o s s i b i l i t y l a s t Novemeber. M a r i a n C e n t r a l assistant principal Tom Landers told the Herald that school officials determined it was not feasible for the school to host the Red Devils. "It wasn't anything negative concerning the Red Devils," Landers said. "Primarily it was b?sed on finances." He said the school would have had to ask" members of the maintenance staff to HOW 10 SUBSCRIBE 10 THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER work at night to clean Up after games. The school decided against the inconvienence it would cause. He also indicated the school was considering work on revitalizing the football field this s u m m e r . M a r i a n Central did not want to create a work conflict with the semi-pro team. Harvard High School football coach Mtc Stevens had expressed opposition to the Red Devils playing at Harvard last summer when the proposal was first forwarded. He was concerned about conflicts with high school games and the condition of the field if the Red Devils played at ! Dan Home during the^J high school- season. With the Red Devils playing all games in July and August. Stevens major concern has been alleviated. "1 think it'll work out OK." Stevens said. "It'll be another way of u>i!ng our facility. and hopefully without too much damage to it." si so 385-0144 si oo TUESDAY ALL SEATS S I oo SAT & SUN TIL S PM ALL SHOWS ' * Bert Reynolds Gotdie Hawn FRI. & MON.-THURS. 7-9:15 SAT. ft SUN. 2-4:15-7-9:15 STARTS FRIDAY If you liked ET, you'll love this heart-warming adventure story I fime Walker- FRI. ft MON.-THURS. 6:30-8:30 SAT. ft SUN. 2:30-4:30-6:30-8:30 The McHenry Plaindealer 3812 W.
