James Fouse, Zoning Board of Appeals City of McHenry, HOW 10 SUBSCRIBE 10 THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER HYPERTENSION Could you be one of the 35 million American adults who have hypertension? If you're saying to yourself, "No, I'm not a tense person," you may be all wrong. Many people confuse hypertension--which is another word for high blood pressure--with tension. Fact is, most people can't tell if their blood pressure is up or not. That's because, in most cases, hyper tension has no symp toms and can be detected only by a blood pressure check. It's been estimated that of the 35 million people suffering from hypertension, only 18 million are aware they have it. And only five million have taken steps to control it. In addition, 25 million people are estimated to have "borderline" hyper tension and probably require regular medical surveillance. In 90 percent of hypertension cases, the causes are unknown. Heredity, race (more blacks are prone to hypertension than whites), and salt intake are definite risk fac tors; emotional stress, fv medication, obesity, age, alcohol and smoking are possible risk factors. While hypertension cannot be cured, it can be controlled with medication. The con sequences of failing to take the proper medication to control high blood pressure can be severe. It means you're especially prone to heart disease, stroke or kidney failure. INDIA Many Indian children have been cured of their malnutrition thanks to a Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) spon sored by CARE. Ashai Verma, one such child from the slums of Baroda, recovered and her family learned to prevent recurrence of malnutrition by using seedlings provided by CARE to grow nutritious food in their own garden. ••HfH GAS PUMP w Carburetor Leakage Carburetors can de- velope both internal and external fuel-leakage problems, either of which can result in a significant loss of fuel economy. MCHS Brochure Contest Winner A course description broohure developed by the McHenry high school Business Education depart ment was a winner in a recent statewide public relations contest. Aptly titled, "The Future is Yours," the brochure won an award of merit in the annual competition sponsored by the Illinois chapter of the National School Public Relations association* An interesting feature of the brochure is that the copy, pictures, lay-out, and printing were all done by M.C.H.S. students. The copy was written by Jean Hoch, photography was done by Andy Lunk, Ken Howerton, and Kurt Williams, and lay-out and printing were ac complished by Ryan Bradley. The entire effort was done under the supervision of Business Education staff members, Dan Boland and Ron Schmitt, who said they believe the capabilities of students should not be underestimated.
