Area wrestlers also experienced a so-so month. The Warriors finished the season with a 45-12 loss to Woodstock and a seventh at the FVC meet. Scott Schmidt at 138 pounds finished third. Johnsburg finished its season with only Mike Hurckes at 132 pounds advancing to sectionals. Also finishing its season was the Warrior Swimming team with a ninth place at the Rockford-Jefferson Distict meet. MARCH The basketball season finally and officially came to a close for the McHenry Warriors boys team. Jacobs put the Warriors out of their misery 57-35 in the Belvidere regional. Just before that, the Crystal Lake South Gators had beaten McHenry in the last game of the Fox Valley Conference schedule 63-42. The Warriors finished the season with a 3- 11 FVC mark and a 3-20 overall record. To put insult on top of insult, the Warriors failed to place a player on the all-conference team. The Hurricane boys season came to a close also. They lost to Marengo in the regional finals 85-65. Unlike McHenry, both Johnsburg and Marian placed players on the all- conference team. Scott Truckenbrod and Mike Sabatka made the all- SHARK squad. Tom Pieper and Jeff Bartman were picked from John­ sburg. McHenry and Johnsburg's girls' basketball sqauds finished their seasons. The Lady Warriors won their final FVC game, 40-28 over Jacobs. The Warriors finished with a 7-7 conference record. Center Karen Karpavicius was chosen for the all- FVC team. But their season ended with a loss to Crystal Lake South in the regionals 60- 38. They finished the season with an overall record of 8-14. Richmond-Burton defeated John­ sburg in the first round of the regionals and Marian defeated R-B for the regional championship. Johnsburg's Sue Dehn, who scored 31 points earlier in the month against St. Edwards and 47 against Hebron, was placed on the All-SHARK team. Cheri Kofler also made the squad for Johnsburg. Jackie Weber and Debbie Liggett both made it for Marian. While other seasons were ending, the McHenry girls bandminton season started. They spit their opening week with a win over Lake Forest and loss to DeKalb. APRIL With the winter sports scene complete and finished, the spring season sports opened up and the .lAM'AKV L'H. IHS:; highlight was the McHenry Warrior tennis team. The Warriors swept through the month of April with a 6-0 record, shutting out teams like Elgin Larkin and Streamwood. The altcountv basketball team was also nam&d in A^pHv Mike Bauml was the only Warrior to make the team in class AA. In class A, Scott Truckenbrod, Mike Sabatka made it for Marian and Hans Rokus was named the coach of the year. Tom Pieper and Jeff Bartman were named from Johnsburg. An all-county wrestling team was also picked and only two area wrestlers made it; Mike Hurpkes and Brett Everett of Johnsburg. Area baseball teams had a rough start in April. The Warriors opened the season defeating Streamwood 8-5. Dave Smith was the winning pither, giving up only three hits in almost six innings. The next game was against Johnsburg and the Warriors prevailed 8-3 and Doug Muller was the winnning pitcher, despite giving up three quick runs in the first inning. The Warriors hit the bottom after the Johnsburg game, losing their Fox Valley Conference opener to Jacobs and then Crystal Lake South, but came back to defeat Cary-Grove twice. The Johnsburg team was blanked in its opener with Cary-Grove and blanked again after the McHenry game 7-0 by Richmond-Burton. The Skyhawks won their first, defeating Grayslake 8-3 with six-hit pitching performance from Rob Peisert. It was Peisert's first starting assignment in over a year. The Skyhawks ended the month winning two of three games. The Warrior softball team opened their season losing to Zion 11-10, in a game the lead changed hands four times. They also lost to Jacobs 6-1, before the Warriors won a game, defeating Crystal Lake South 6-2. Cissy Pinkstaff pitched a one-hitter. But the Warrior girls lost two games to Woodstock to close out April. The Johnsburg softball team began the season with a split with Grant, 8- 11, 19-4. The Marian softball team defeated Cary-Grove 7-6, Woodstock 7-1 and Harvard 12-7. The defending FVC boys track champion, McHenry Warriors, placed fourth in the Crystal Lake Central indoor invitational with 62 points. Central won the meet with 149 points. Wade Cepulis placed second in the mile run and th 880 relay team placed second. The Warriors might have done better, but the other two relay teams were disqualified. The Warrior girls were one of 10 teams that failed to score a point. The Warriors rebounded by defeating Round Lake 84-43 and defeating their home outdoor opener 96-49 over Crystal Lake South. They finished off the month with a 17th pace at the Kaneland invititaional. In outdoor action, the Warrior girls ""'if#. The game was an easy one for the Blue Streaks, however, as they rolled to a 88-55 win to improve their league mark to M. McHenry dropped to 3-7. MAY The Warrior tennis team ccarried its winning ways into May, but hit a snag late in the month. After five straight victories without losing a match, the Warriors finally lost a match in a win against Round Lake. They carried a 5-1 and 12-1 record into weekend matches with Jacobs and Dundee. The Warriors defeated Jacobs 5-0, but lost to Dundee 3-2. One week later, the Warrior netters finished third in the Fox Valley Conference championship. The tennis season ended for the majority of the Warriors, as only Randy Glick and Scott Rhode advanced after the district meet to the state meet as a doubles team. Dan Kiernman from Johnsburg, also advanced to the state meet as a member of the Skyhawk team. Just before the district meet, the Skyhawk netters captured the SHARK title and Kiernman won the singles title. .The McHenry Polo team also ad­ vanced to the state meet with a 13-9 victory over Mt. Carmel of Chicago. It was the fifth time Coach Mike shanahan had a Warrior team qualify. But, the Warriors drowned at the state meet, quickly losing to Oak Park 22- 16. The month of May was kicked off with the annual McHenry relays. The Warriors finished sixth. The highlight of the meet was the four record borken. On it's way to winning the meet, Hoffman Estates broke two of the records. The Warriors finished fifth at the Woodstock Invitational and then finished third at the FVC meet at Algonquin with 83 points. Crystal Lake Central won the meet with month. But, they came back with a victory over Grayslake 17-7 as Donna Chesler hit two home runs for the Warriors. " After a split doubleheader with Crystal Lake Central, the Warriors clobbered Crystal Lake South 10-5 with a grand slam by Robin Geiger. They finished off the month with a 10-4 victory over Crown at their new field. Cissy Pinkstaff hit the first homerun at the new field. The Johnsburg softball team also split a doubleheader to start the month and then spit two conference games. One of the highlites of the month was the dedication of the new 12-inch softball facilites at Knox Park. Former Plaindealer sports editor Earl Walsh threw the first pitch to Mayor Joseph Stanek. JUNE The high school sporting season came to a halt in June and the end came quickly for area teams. The Marian girls' softball team lost The Warrior baseball team also closed out its season, losing to Freeport in regional play. The Warriors claimed a 5-14 overall record. With the close of the baseball season, the all-conference teams were chosen. Five Skyhawks made the Northwest Suburban Conference baseball team -- Joe Meyers at first base, Scott Zalke at second base, Larry Dix pitcher, Tom Pieper centerfielder and Don Rickert pithcer and third baseman. Only Doug Mullen in baseball and Karen Karpavicius in softball made all-FVC from McHenry. The McHenry Warrior track team also ended its season with a fourth place at the County meet. Some announcements were also made in June. The biggest one, was the appointment of Randy Oberembt as football caoch at Johnsburg High School. He was * football coach at Tishilwan High School. An announcement was made of the it with 132^ to Cary-Grove in the Cfystal Lake first letter intent to a major college by points. The junior Skyhawk raised his team-leading record to 22-4 by finishing third at the Harvard Class A D'strict meet. The McHenry Warrior baseball team dropped two of its three games of the month and then dropped three more FVC games for the month. The Johnsburg Skyhawks went the other direction, defeating Harvard 1-0 and then winning four of its next five games. The 'Hawks defeated Rich­ mond-Burton 9-5 and Marian 1-0. The Skyhawks went on to win its regional opener with Rockford Lutheran 11-1. Larry Dix was the winning pitcher, giving up four hits and striking out five in five innings. Johnsburg, however, lost the next regional game to Marengo 7-5. The Warrior softball team had the same kind of luck as the baseball team, losing its first two games of the eliminated by Jacobs and Johnsburg was eliminated by Crystal Lake South 13-0. Sue Dehn picked Winona State University.
