PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY?, 1983 LARL W ALSH So I Hear Considering storms, floods and other serious problems in other parts of the country makes a fellow think that living in McHenry County isn't so bad. Met Barb Weber at McHenry Country Club. We were dining this time, not riding in a golf cart. -- ) Ed Buss is home from parts where the sun is higher and his tan shows he didn't spend his time at watering troughs. OLD SAYINGS: Oh dear Bread and beer, If I were in heaven, I wouldn't be here. You can't fire me. I quit. For a long time we have saved our magazines for Bertilla Freund and her cohorts to take to a veterans' hospital. The girl^, after doing an admirable job, have found it necessary to discontinue the trips. They would be pleased to turn it over to some willing and able men. One thought is to take the magazines to various doctors' offices. Compared to some we have seen, ours are current. A packed house gathered at McHenry Country Club Saturday night for the McHenry Hospital an nual dinner meeting. They have a new name now. It was slippery underfoot Saturday night so Virginia Williams and I marched along arm in arm while entering. When leaving, Betty Phalen grabbed my arm and we were off to a great start when suddenly she asked, "Where's your car?" When I pointed to way to hellangone down the pike, she dropped me like a hot potato. Fleeting fancy. Merwyn Schmitt (a Sox fan) came to our table to ask what we are going to do with Ron LeFlore. I suggested we give him to the Cubs as a generous gesture. He seconded the motion. Now is the time for our local Chamber of Commerce to send out pictures of our beautiful snow covered trees. In that care of your car program on TV, we were advised to rub a potato over your windshield when you know it is going to rain. That's a raw potato, not mashed nor a sweet potato. Politicans are telling what they have done and what they plan to do. Forget all that baloney and let's" help those less fortunate who are hungry and without heat. All the poverty isn't in far away places. Don Howard has an old time picture of Grandpa and Grandma Weber's home on Riverside Drive. He has promised to let us use it for publication after his mother identifies those in the picture. It is a real prize. Weber's Hall stood across the street on what is now the beach on Fox River. Seems to me it wasn't far south from the Frank and Avis Gans home. Weber's Hall brings back memories. How well I remember when a group of us young sprouts chipped in and paid the two dollar sTMSN-- 801 H. RIVER RD.-McHEHKV OPEN LUNCH « DINNER DISCOUNT t FREE COFFEE TO SR. CITIZEN rental on the hall to hold a Halloween party. Leaving the hall to take my date home (mothers expected you to bring their precious daughters home at a certain hour), I found the air had been let out of all the tires. Five boys stood nearby professing their innocence. I didn't buy that and as Irish blood took over for better judgment, I of fered to take them on one at a time. They were amused. Pumping up four tires with a little hand pump wasn't very amusing to me. / One time some of us young 'uns joined some oldsters at a dance in Weber's Hall. Bill Quinn and Mike Conway brought their fiddles. Bill also brought some jugs of homemade wine. When some thought Bill had imbibed enough, they hid the jug. That brought on a roaring storm' Mike took the jugs home and every time Bill came for a visit, the wine was served. Bill never got through bragging up the fine wine served by Mike. The floor in the old hall got shaky and the building started to lean. No more dances. Just memories. There were children playing in their front yards building snowmen after dark when some machines flew across the yard. We could have had some serious injuries if these kids had not moved quickly. There are many miles of trails for snowmobiles and I hope these offenders remember to use them next time they go out. Sophocles' WH pr>or ° TODAY THIS HOUSE IS JUST SMART TOMORROW ITU •BE BRUIAm f? 1 V Nobody has to tell you what's happening to the cost of energy today. It's all up, up, up. So if you're looking for a new house, it makes a whole lot of sense to look for one with an Energy Smart sign out front. One that uses energy like a miser. That keeps the cost down, down, down. That means a house with double-glazed windows. With ceilings insulated to a minimum rating of R-19. With walls insulated to at least R-ll. , With exterior openings carefully weather-stripped and caulked. And with an Electric Heat Pump instead of a central air conditioner and furnace That's the key. The Heat Pump. All summer long it works just like central air condi tioning. But in the winter it reverses itself. It takes heat from the air outside and pumps it inside to keep you warm. What's more, the Heat Pump does that so efficiently it provides at least 50 percent more energy (heat) than the energy (electri city) it uses. And that's very, very smart when you consider that the cost of natural gas has gone ROLUHS • _Mc. tu»- 1 ,lOCAt»°N ...MASH® W®- ,.30-5-op q.30-5-30 Vso-5-w tuts. 9.4W „0 -sr & && Better vet, it'll be downright brilliant when natural gas gets deregulated or OPEC bumps up the price of oil a tew more times.
