CINDI KINSALA The McHenry Girls' basketball team suffered two losses last week as they challenged Crystal Lake South and Jacobs. „ On Thursday, the Warriors met South's Gators and left with a 59-43 defeat. Saturday, the Warriors were defeated by last place Golden Eagles of Jacobs 38-33. The Warriors are now 2-6 in the Fox Valley Conference and 3-11 overall. The first quarter in the South game started off badly for the Warriors, outscored 14-6. The second quarter showed a slight comeback for the Warriors as they closed the Gator lead to within six points with three minutes left in the half. But the Gators were determine to keep a safe lead, as they ran off 10 unanswered points. "We just started to catch up, but we missed a lot of crucial free throws," said Pat Wirtz, coach of the Warriors. The half ended with the Gators in the lead 30-18. The second half proved to be more of a game. The third quarter ended with the Gators out- scoring the Warriors 12-9. "Renee Mezzano played an out standing defensive game," said Wirtz. "She confused the other team and caused them to make dumb shots and bad passes." Debbie Koeber was high scorer for the Warriors with 12 and Karen Karpavicius followed with 10. Lynn Navjokas scored 26 points for South. The fourth quarter was the closest the Warriors would get to outscoring the Gators as they scored 16 points, compared to the Garors 17 points. The Warriors trailed throughout the game and were never able to bring the score closer than two points. The story of the game can be best told from the stats with the Gators shooting at 45 percent, compared to the Warriors 35 percent. The Gators outrebounded McHenry, pulling down 44, compared to 25 by McHenry. "We didn't take time to think. We just threw the ball to an area, whether a teammate was there or not and that is how the ball gets intercepted," said Wirtz. "Our free throws just weren't hitting and those points could have made a big difference. But, overall we did play pretty well." The first quarter of the Jacobs game started out slowly. After about one minute, the Golden Eagles scored on a free throw and soon followed with a basket to give them a 3-0 lead. Karpavicius added a basket for McHenry to decrease the Eagles lead to only 3-2. The Golden Eagles followed with four more points, before Warrior Andee Norton added two free throws. The quarter ended with the Eagles in front 7-5. In the second quarter the tempo started to pick-up, as Mezzano drove down the floor for a layup. The Eagles followed- with a basket, but Kar pavicius followed with her own baskets to tie the score at 9-9. The Golden Eagles again took the lead by two with a basket. Mezzano followed with another driving layup to tie the score once again. This did not last long, however, as the Golden Eagles were able to score only 20 seconds later. After two more minutes, Jacobs hit again with two to give them a 14-11 lead. After another Eagle basket, Koerber hit with a 15-footer, followed by two free throws by Norton. With only two seconds left, Kris Keevil hit a shot to put the Warriors in the lead at end of the half, 17-16. The second half started slowly as the first. Greta Larsen hit with a free throw to increase the Warriors lead, Scoreboard pounds, Tony Piwowarczyk also had a fourth. Jeff Nusbaum ran his record to 15-10 as he took fifth place at 119 pounds. Nusbaum lost his two opening mat ches, but then beat his St. Edwards' opponent for fifth place. "Some of our kids didn't wrestle as well as I'd hoped they would," Marian Coach Mike Garvey said. "But I guess it's better they get it off their chests now before the sectionals come up." The regional meet will be this weekend at Harvard. After four minutes of play, Karpavicius hit for McHenry for the last time in the quarter. The Golden Eagles continued to score and went ahead of the Warriors 26-22 to end the third quarter. "Our shots weren't falling and our free throws were pitiful," said Wirtz. "Our free throw percent didn't even average out to 33 percent and they (Jacobs) hit for 67 percent when they had to." Karpavicius was high scorer for the Warriors with 16. Eight of those were scored in the last quarter. She was also top rebounder with 10, followed by Koerber's nine. Keevil opened up the fourth quarter with a free thow, followed by a steal and a basket by Karpavicius. Kar pavicius struck again to give the Warriors a one point lead. The Golden Eagles followed with a free throw and a basket to resume their lead. Karpavicius again hit with a basket, N following another Jacobs free throw, as McHenry trailed by one, 30-29. The Eagles struck again with a basket, but Larsen followed with a Warrior basket to keep them only in the lead by one. Karpavicius hit once more, following an Eagle free throw to tie the score for the last time at 33-33. With only 45 seconds left and the score tied, Karpavicius hit again to give the Warriors a 35-33 lead. The Eagles followed with three points and were fouled at the buzzer with a 36-33 lead. But two free throws were made and the final score was 38- 33. "Our defense was tough, but we need more accuracy on our offense," said Wirtz. "Our defense caused them many turnovers, but that wasn't enough to win the game." 8th Annual Rescue 50 To Run Sunday The Harmony Snowmobile Club never gave up hope for the long awaited snow that hit the McHenry area this last week.
