5ERVICE NEWS Rhonda Ackerman Joins Navy Via Delayed Entry mi RHONDA ACKERMAN Rhonda Ackerman recently joined the Navy through the Delayed Entry program. She will attend boot camp in Orlando, Fla., from October to December. Further training will be at a school in Memphis, Tenn., where she will study to be an air traffic controller. The young lady has been very active at Thorndale, Texas, high school,where she is a member of the National Honor society. Miss Ackerman also is a member of the Science club, year book staff, and is first vice-president of the Future Homemakers of America and senior representative on the Student Council. She plays in the band and recently was selected for all-district band. She was with the flag bearers during marching season for two years. Rhonda, who attended Johnsburg grade school for eight years, has been on the 'A' honor roll all four years of high school. She was a member of the play casts for the last two years. Her sister, Rosae, was in the Navy in Weather Service. She, too was active in school activities, espeically FHA. Their father, Chrles, was at one time a member of the Mchenry Police department. New Jersey Back In Service With McHenry Man Aboard Navy Seaman Apprentice Mark K. Scheib, son of Kenneth and Joan Scheib of 5202 Abbey drive, McHenry, is a member of the battleship USS New Jersey, homeported in Long Beach, Calif. The New Jersey, the first of the four "Iowa" class battleships to reenter active service, was recently recommissioned at the Long Beach Naval shipyard. The ceremony in­ cluded President Reagan as the primary speaker. The battleship was originally commissioned in May, 1943, for use in WW II. Following the war, the massive ship was decommissioned and "mothballed" until it was reactivated for use during the Korean and Vietnam conflict. Plans for reactivation of the New Jersey began in 1981 and were followed by an extensive overhaul period. Advanced radar and com­ munications systems were installed, and "Harpoon" and "Tomahawk" missiles were added to the ship's arsenal, which includes nine 16-inch guns and 20 5-inch guns. The New Jersey is 887 feet long and carries a crew of approximately 70 officers and 1,600 enlisted members. It is capable of carrying helicopters and "Harrier" vertical take-off aircraft. Hears President i Coast Guard Fireman Michael J. Granath, son of John E. and Margie Granath of 1313 Meadow lane, McHenry, recently attended a speech by President Reagan at Coast Guard Base Miami Beach, Fla. He is a crewmember aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Cape Current, homeported in Miami Beach. The President was in Florida to observe the operations of the vice- prc ident's Task Force on Drugs. President Reagan delivered a speech to Coast Guard members and guests, praising the Coast Guard's efforts in the Task Force while continuing traditional missions such as search and rescue and marine environmental protection. The Task Force was initiated to help eliminate the inlfux of illegal drugs into the U.S. Promoted In Army Reserve Alfred P. Kurz, Jr., a resident of Island Lake, recently received a promotion to the rank of sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve in ceremonies at Fort Sheridan. Brigadier General David M. Burner, Jr., commander of the 425th Transportation brigade, pinned sergeant stripes on Kurz's shoulders. Kurz is a motor vehicle operator in the 425th, a brigade that controls Army Reserve units in six mid- western states. In civilian life Kurz is employed in Lake Zurich. He is married and the father of one daughter. Maintenance Course Completed By Airman Airman Frank W. Martin, III son of Elaine Perry of Poplar Grove, and Frank W. Martin II of 4608 Northfox lane, McHenry, has graduated from Three Enjoy Tiger Cruise John Boehm and his son, Gary Boehm, are two of the lucky passengers of a Tiger cruise on the U.S.S. Eisenhower, one <f the Navy department's newest nuclear aircarft carriers. Boehm's oldest son, CW04 James W. Doran, gunnery officer on the carrier, will retire from the Navy in July , and was given this opportunity to demonstrate fot the male members of i is family what he has been doing for the past 20 years. Meritorious Medal Given Air Force Major Douglas H. Kohrt, son of Carl H. and Catherine G. Kohrt of 1511N. Flower street, McHenry, has been decorated with the Meritorius Service medal at RAF Greenham Common, England. , The Meritorious Service medal is awarded specifically for outstanding non-combat meritorious achievement of service to the United States. Kohrt is a staff judge advocate. Training Ends Navy Seaman Apprentice Daniel J. Koivisto, son of Jack R. and Alice L. Koivisto of 3108 Bull Valley road, McHenry, has completed recruit training at the Naval Training center, San Diego. During the eight-week training The cruise sailed frrm Ft. Campbell, daughter ot Herbert J and Ozetta Campbell of 1901 N. Flower street, McHenry, has completed Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. During the six weeks at Lackland, the airman studied the Air force mission, organization and customs and received credits towards an associate degree in applied science through the Community College of the Air Force. The airman will now receive specialized instruction in the in­ telligence field at the Presidio of Monterey, Calif. She is a 1982 graduate of McHenry West campus high school.
