Edward Judd, ton f Henry. 1975, ' Soap Beat j Soap producers caught in 'musical chairs' game By Connie Passalacqua Most soap fans avidly fol low the progress of actors from one show to the next In a fairly continuous pattern, which can best be described as a game of musical chairs. Having much more far-reaching effects however, is a series of mpves being made this month by Procter and Gamble among top execu tives on three of the five daytime shows it owns -- ."Another World," "Guiding Light" and "Search for Tomorrow." After 12 years at the helm of "Another World," executive produer Paul Rauch is stepping down to be replaced by "Guiding Light's" top producer Allen Potter. Rauch's long reign is unusual in a medium where a producer's job life span averages two to three years. Rauch took oVer the show in the early '70s. At that time, it was the high est-rated soap opera. He maintained this position for several years, but during the last few years the show has made an alarming slide into the ratings basement. To prevent this trend, Rauch brought in writers with distinguished theatri cal backgrounds, hired top actors, most of whom had previously worked on ABC soaps and oversaw several excellent location shoot ings. P & G obviously hopes Potter can improve "AW's" ratings just as Allen Potter "GL's" ratings have improved during his tenure there. The show has won several Emmys during the last few years, but has seemed to run out of steam since the much-respected headwriter Doug Marland left the show last summer in a dispute with Potter over creative control. Stepping into Potter's position is Gail Kobe, who was the last producer of P&G's recently canceled "Texas." Miss Kobe, an ex-actress, won the respect of the actors on that show by maintaining an "open door" policy in making decisions. "Search for Tomorrow," P & G's lowest-rated show,, is losing ex-child star Fred Bartholomew as executive producer. Another ex- actress Joanne Lee is tak ing over his.position. Can she save the show from its widely predicted imminent cancellation? Stay tuned. ©1913 Compulog
