STAFF PHOTO -- WAYNE GAYLORD Streaks Top Marian SAM NATROP SHAW MEDIA NEWS SERVICE WOODSTOCK -- There was a coming out party in the Marian Gym Tuesday night. It was a party to celebrate the return of a temporararily-lost soldier. And the guest of honor wore a dark blue tank-top shirt with a big number 51 on it and had a scowl on his face that could cause recurring nightmares. Brad Hutter, a rugged 6-foot-3 stick of dynamite, exploded Tuesday night to the tune of 26 points and 13 rebounds as the Woodstock Blue Streaks edged cross-town rival Marian, 77-74, before a packed house at Marian. # r Hutter dominated underneath the basket as he picked up his points on spinning, twisting moves, a soft-touch jumper from the 10-12 foot range and a couple a buckets affectionately known as "garbage." They outplayed the Gators, but once again the Collins crew came out ahead in the final score. It was the sixth time the Gators were involved in a game settled by two points or less. They won five of them. Luck or not, they seem to come out ahead in the close ones. With a two point loss to co-leader Jacobs several weeks ago, it proves the Warriors can play with the best in the Fox Valley. They will try and get back on the winning track tonight at Crown when they take on the Vikings. The Vikes took a beating last week from Cary-Crove, and the Warriors will have to be on guard. The earlier win by 13 points means nothing at this time of the season. Congratulations are in order to Pat Wirtz and his "Lady Warriors". They defeated a fine Crown team last Saturday 39-38, after almost blowing a 16 point lead. It was an upset in almost everyone's mind except the genial Wr.rrior coach. "We should have won our first game with them and even though they are in third place, we can play with them anytime." I think Warrior fans will agree. Mike Shanahan's swimmers close out their regular season this week against Elgin Larkin, then travel to Rockford Jefferson for the On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbitt District. Competition will be tough, but the Warriors did have a fine season with a limited number of boys on the squad. Elroy Fitzgerald was a press row visitor last Friday night. He took a night off from officiating to observe the Warrior and Gators. Being a member of the Crystal Lake School Board, he was our enemy last Friday night during the contest. The Warriors did have him wringing his hands throughout the contest, but the likeable t pri Did wonder where S.I.H. was, and he was told all good Warrior fans will be at the Jacobs game next week, rain or shine. Monday night the I.H.S.A. district for class A schools begins and Johnsburg will be the host area schools. Mike Lamb will tell you all about it, but do hope that our good friend Jim Meyers will have a seat for me Monday night. Bill Barry's Marengo Indians will be the team to beat. ^ ******** Down memory lane this week we go back to the 1969-70 season when the Zion ZeeBees played before the largest crowd in West Campus history. Both upper and lower decks were filled to capacity at the gym. We haven't even come close since that time. The Warriors with Mike Weingart hitting from the side all night defeated the high flying squad from Zion 68-61. Bruce Harbecke and Mike Freund each scored 11 as the gym was a complete madhouse after the game. "I told Brad he had to play more relaxed and under control. We can't have him on the bench in foul trouble for most of a game/' Woodstock Coach Gordie Tebo said. "I thought about it (the Central game) all weekend and I was pretty upset. It was all I could think about," Hutter said after the game. "But tonight I relaxed and didn't try to reject anything (block shots) except for the one in the third quarter. The whole team came out ready to go and everyone played really well. "We needed this one. I knew everyone would be worked up for it and we came out and did a great job," Hutter said. "Brad means a lot to us. He's an outstanding offensive rebounder," Tebo said. "Our shooters could make a mistake (by missing a shot) and Brad would be there to put in the rebound."
