PACE 4 - PLAIN DEALER - WEDNESDAY. MARCH Z. 1*3 --EARL WALSH" So I Hear Looking through an old scrap book, ah item of 30 years ago told of some hell-raisin' about the price of a cup of coffee bouncing up to 15 cents. Some coffee drinkers threatened to turn to tea. All those interviewed "thought it was terrible, but probably would pay the outrageous price. Back at the turn of the century Mcflenry didn't have too many so instead of publishing a t® names and numbers re printed in the Plaindealer. 1 gfound this old time ad in a Plain- dealer of yesteryear: ^v'Give us a chance to show you our ljbe of underwear. We believe the ult will te to*our mutual benefit." Bob Blake says he witnessed a 300 me bowled by Jimmy Bacon iiirsday night at McHenry Rec. Bob, Morrie Crouch, Tom Sutton and more of the group had never seen a perfect game so excitement ran high. Congratulations, Jimmy. Too bad, Jimmy, your grandfather, "Dutch" Bacon, isn't alive today. He was a great athlete and would have been mighty proud. Am not sure if your Dad was a bowler or not, but it took a bulldozer to move him out of the line in football. Remember that entertaining program "My Friend Irma"? The phone rang and it was "My Friend Mona" calling. She is a fellow White Sox fan. Mona read about Joe Wagner's robin. Saturday she had one of her own. This one pulled a banner which she says read "Sox Winner". There goes one of our last sources of McHenry history. Old Timer Fred WARMTH IN _ WEDNESDAY-r- THURSDAY --3-- FRIDAY SATURDAY SUNDAY ROAST TURKEY I* DRESSING! « *4" PRIME RIB AU YOU- CAR-UT FRIED CHICKEN 2? V5 I TAODfffi Schoewer lived to a ripe old age and stayed sharp. We called on Fred several times in recent years to ask his help in iden tifying pictures of early McHenry. The ranks are thinning and those old stalwarts are missed. Curtis Bremer wants us to give a plug to the McHenry Lions Club pancake breakfast coming along next Sunday, March 6, at the American Legion Hall. A plug. Why not? The Lions have done many noteworthy things to help those who need a boost. We'll be there. If spring hasn't sprung, those golfers and kids flying kites Sunday afternoon hadn't heard. Maybe you guessed by this time. I haven't any connected thoughts for this column so will just keep fishing for a few ideas. Many years ago, a fellow was 1 me his troubles and said, "I always heard that life begins at 40. Well, I reached 40 and my wife decided to trade me off for two 20's". Maybe life begins at 40 or maybe it begins to fade. We were surprised to meet Dick and Marlene Sagers Sunday. They are friends, formerly on the Plaindealer staff. I always feel sorry for a little kid whose parents won't let him sit on the outside (aisle side) of a pew in church. If the poor kid is stashed in the middle, he is engulfed by tall ones and can't see a thing that is going on at the altar. We are always amused when an MC calls on somebody to say a few words. It is usually a hidden message that means-- "Make it short". It doesn't always work, but worth the try. Corn bread holds a certain fascination for my taste buds. Not so with corn meal mush unless it is fried. This week Alvina found a recipe on a box that called for adding a cup of whole kernel corn. An advocate of waste makes want, she happened to have a cup of leftover corn in the refrigerator and dashed it into the bread mix. That was real eatin'. That's that. If Wednesday cranes, can Friday be far behind? Crane has announced that his office again this year will par ticipate in the Congressional Senior Citizen Intern program. Plans call for sending two senior citizens from the 12th Congressional district to Washington to take part in the 1963 program from May 23 through May 27. Those selected are given the op portunity of receiving a first hand look at Washington and Congress at work. Interns become better acquainted not only with Congress in general, but also in particular with legislation affecting the elderly. Although interns must pay their expenses, this is not just a vacation in Washington. Par ticipants are active individuals who, once they return from their in ternship, apply what they have learned within the senior community. Persons wishing to apply must meet certain qualifications. Among these is the active involvement in senior citizen projects in his' or her com^ munity. The applicant must be willing' to share what is learned with ot once the Washington program completed. The intern must be in good health! and at least 60 years of age. All interested senior citizens in the 12th district should send applications by March 15 stating why they would like to serve and how they would use , the program to benefit the Com munity once they return from Washington. Applications should include general information about the applicant's activities. Letters of recommendation from community leaders familar with the applicant's qualifications: should accompany the application. Applications should be mailed to Congressman Crane at either of the two district office: 56 N. Williams, - Crystal Lake, 111., 60014, or 1450 S. i New WOke Road, Arlington Heights,! 111., 60005. Meaning Behind Recycling McHenry County Defenders remind that recycling means more than bringing certain items to the drive; it means buying products which can be recycled, keeping those items separate after use, and then returning them to be reused, refilled, or remanufactured into the same or similar products (i.e., newspaper into newsprint, glass containers into other glass containers, aluminum cans into more aluminum cans, etc.) Only a minimum amount of care is required by the homeowner to prepare materials for recycling. In the case of glass bottles and jars, all plastic and metal must be removed; (for example, many pop bottles are packaged in plastic jackets). To save volunteer workers a lot of time, often in unpleasant weather conditions, the public is urged to remove these jackets before bringing the bottles to the drive. Another problem for recyclers is the aluminum ring left on wine and other beverage bottles when the cap is removed. Defenders recommend the use of an ice pick or other sturdy, pointed tools for this job. Both the plastic and aluminum must be removed to avoid "poisoning" the glass mix to be melted and re-used. Paper labels are harmless and need not be removed. Eighth grade students of Montini Middle school will be co-sponsoring the McHenry recycling drive with the McHmry County Defenders Satur day, March 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The drive is conducted at the McHenry Market Place parking lot on West Route 120. Both parents and students will be on hand in this family project to raise money for a class trip. If you cannot bring your materials to the recycling drive, contact Montini Middle school at 385-1022 to arrange for a pickup. Call as early as possible, giving name, address, phone number and arrange a time for pickup. For further information about recycling or how a group can par ticipate in this activity, call the Defenders representative at 385-8512.
