Local men interested in the civilian defense setup gathered with others from out of the county for the purpose of discussing various localities in regard to the order issued by the chairman of the civil protection division of the Illinois State Council of Defense, calling all defense corps in the state into assembly on March 29. Those who attended from here were Mayor Overton, Ben J. Dietz, in charge of the local defense unit , Chief Observer Harold Owen, Chief of Police Howard Cairns, Alderman George Freund, all of McHenry, and Fred J. Smith of Johnsburg. Pvt. Wallace Dobyns has arrived in Yuma, Ariz. He was one of eight out of a squadron of 300 chosen by the company commander to go in ad­ vance to make preparations for the balance of his company, which was moved at a later date. Alan Rietesel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Rietesel, was winner of first place in the annual essay contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary. The essay theme was "America's Future Is Up To Youth". Alan is a freshman in the local high school. The White Shrine of Jerusalem will be organized in McHenry, it was announced. A committee from Grove jstreet in Cooney Heights attended the council meeting and reported that most of the property members have signed for the proposed sanitary sewer installation. Since the council has taken a stand against extending sewer and water mains oeyond city limits, it appears that some property owners in the Grove street area may petition to be annexed to the city. It now seems certain that the sewer extension will be made this spring. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 21, 1973). The sheriff's department handled 27 CLLEA, accidents over the past weekend as a result of the late season snowfall. Of the 14 accidents which occurred in this area, five involved tickets or injuries. Gordon Smith, Crystal Lake business man, is the newest member of the board of directors of McHenry hospital. McHenry county has been alloted $23,968 as its share of motor fuel tax paid into the state treasury during February for townships and road districts. Kevin Weiss received the most valuable swimmer award. Kevin holds seven varsity records in swimming. The most improved swimmers were Mark Koerber and Brian Fetzer. Mark and Brian tied for the honor. Jaycee Women To\Hold Seminar toy Trim's' sday evening, March 24 at 8 p.m., the McHenry Area Jaycee Women are extending a special in­ vitation to the women of the McHenry area to join them for an evening of questions and answers with Dr. Halsted. He will be there to talk about children - their health and safety. This is an evening of fun and in­ formation to be held at McHenry hospital. "Jaycee Women is a young women's organization, who learn and grow for ourselves, and we also provide help in the community, and grow toward a better future." The Parade will be led by Affie, a 15-year- old, 6,600 lb. female African elephant, and several animals from the Brook­ field Zoo Children's Zoo. The festivities will begin at 2 p.m., when children and animals will assemble and walk out into the park to show off their Easter finery.
