Mass is at noon, dinner follows. The Italians, Polish and Germans all claim St. Joseph's Day. League of nations. In contrast, everybody is Irish on the 17th of March. We have our fun, but fun or no fun Kathy thinks 'twould be great fun for us to join their group on Sunday. How can we turn down an invitation from a nice girl with a smile in her voice! What would we do without the likes o' Marie Yegge? A phone call from Marie Sunday night let us know that Lawrence Welk was on the air with a St. Patrick's Day program. The Hat Me Fa-a-ther Wore was a song that brought back memories of my father. He sang that song early every St. Patrick's morning. Joe Feeney singing Galway Bay went right to my heart. Just thinking. Kids used to say "Open your mouth and close your eyes and see what God will give you". Sometimes that got mighty tricky. As people grow older, they learn opening the mouth even without closing the eyes can be dangerous. When the Chicago Tribune endorses a Democrat for mayor, anything can happen. We may get an Irish Pope yet! All the news about cutting prices and controlling supply of oil makes one think that big shortage was a bunch of baloney. Some gas stations didn't have enough to meet the demand. Others had plenty. The big scare was on during our last trip to Sarasota. We bought all our gas from a station across from the motel. When the station was closed one Sunday and our tank was low, our concern grew. Early Monday morning, I pulled up to the pumps and asked the boss if he was out of gas on Sunday. "Naw", he replied, "we got plenty of gas. I just wanted a Sunday off. After this week, I should be either a new man or ready for the ash heap. An M.D. , a surgeon (minor), a dentist and an eye doctor are on my list. Now, the worst thing that can happen to me is a trip to the bar­ bershop. The opportunity doesn't present itself often these days, but nothing gives me more of a lift than climbing into one of those chairs and having my shoes shined. If we go in for a complete physical, we take a bath. Going to a dentist we clean our teeth. A trip to the foot doctor means wash your feet. You take it from there. Tom Sutton reminds me that Jimmy Bacon, the 300 game bowler, had further history to follow. His dad's grandfather, Lester V. Adams, was a top notch bowler. Graduates Work For Class Trip Class trips at the end of elementary school probably stand out as a favorite memory, according to a McHenry County Defenders spo­ kesman. Bringing recyclable items to the Mcflfenry recycling drive Saturday, March 19, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the McHenry Market Place parking lof on West Route 120 will help the members of the Montini Middle school's graduating class to realize this dream. According to Mrs. Dolores Wines, the group hopes to raise enough money for every class member to go on this trip. The students and their parents will be on hand Saturday, working toward this goal, as they co- sponsor this drive with the McHenry County Defenders. Arrangements can be made for pick-ups, if necessary, by calling Mrs. Wines at 385-1022. An immediate pay-back plan is in effect for 100 percent aluminum cans, netting the bringer 23 cents per pound, if the cans are crushed and contain no bi-metal cans in the mix. IOTO-\ The third and final film of the Audubon Wildlife series will be shown Sunday afternoon, March 20, at 2 p.m. at the Woodstock Opera House. Walter H. Berlet will present his movie "American Heartland: The Great River Story", a record of a journey up the Mississippi from the Delta to its source at Lake Itasca, Minn. Going beyond the ordinary visibility of his subjects, Berlet uses special cameras and lenses in order to magnify and penetrate nature. He traveled with his wife, Myrna, filming the river and the life it breeds and nourishes, from the wintering birds near the Gulf, through armadillo and aligator habitat, on north to deer,, moose, and timber wolf country. Berlet was born in western Ohio, where he spent many of his young years studying animals, later graduating from Ohio State univer­ sity. He has produced more than 20 educational films, and 14 television shows which are now being shown in Japan, England, Germany, Mexico, Canada and this country.
