Unlike last week in class A when Lawrenceville was the pre-tourney favorite, there seems to be no outstanding team in Double A. There are some mighty good teams, but not really a standout. Our favorite West Side Banker likes Peoria Central. Coach Ken Ludwig thinks Springfield has a good chance -- they beat Quincy, so they can't be too bad. I like Thornton of Harvey, but if anything like my football picks, don't bet on Thornton. The Gators of Crystal Lake South gave it the old college try, but lost to Elgin 71-64 in the RockfordSupersectional. The Gators were the last hope of the Fox Valley for a representative at the state finals. The Gators and Coach Gary Collins are to be congratulated on a fine season. It isn't every year an area team qualifies for the sweet 16. With the snow off the ground, there is a lot of outdoor activity at McHenry High these days. Dan Boland has his thinclads getting ready for the outdoor season. Brian Wilson's baseball team were working out in the chilly weather, and Gary Gray's tennis team was seen at the West Campus courts getting in shape for the season. Pat Wirtz and his girls' softball team were taking a few cuts in back of West Campus today. I don't envy any of the coaches in this type of weather. On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbitt ******** Good thing Carol Beyer let Bob out of the house over the weekend, so we could get together chasing the little white ball. ******** Last week we promised the box score of the Warriors win over Rockford Guilford enabling the Warriors to reach the sweet 16. Who can forget that thrilling victory, when Koerber, Ludwig, Reilly, Lund, Decker, Hurckes, Hertel, Miller and Christy put together a fine fourth quarter rally that gave the Warriors the win. Better yet, the surprise look on the part of the Guilford fans, when Larry Lund came into the gym in the closing seconds with a package of McHenry Plaindealers made up with the headline, "Warriors beat Guilford -- McHenry in Sweet 16." It was a great night in Warrior history, and the 2,000 fans in attendance will never forget it. Let's hope we can do U again inthe near future. More than 350 of America's top ranked cowboys, hoping to cut themselves a chunk of more than $65,000 in prize money, will compete. after they defeated the Gators 71-64, in the R o c k f o r d S u p e r - sectional at the Metro Centre Tuesday night. "Yes, that is probably the best team, and it's by far the best jumping team we've played so far this year," Collins said. The Maroons, now 22- 7, face top-ranked Chicago Marshall in the opening round of the Illinois High School A s s o c i a t i o n s t a t e tourney Thursday. After fighting tooth- and-nail with Elgin the entire might, South's hopes for a state tourney berth took a turn for the worse when Dayton fouled out early in the fourth quarter. Things got even worse when South's other top scorer, Witt, was sent to the bench with his fifth foul with 2:37 remaining. "When Tom and Butch went out that was pretty much the game," Collins said. "Whenever y o u t a k e y o u r t w o leading scores out it's tough to stay in a game.'
