c> PAGE 16 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, MARCH 25,1983 Nature Conservancy Will Buy 120 Acres in Palm Sunday Service The Nature Conservancy has .exercised an option to purchase a small dam and over 120 acres of wetland at Lake Elizabeth, just south of the Wisconsin border near Rich mond. In doing so, the Conservancy ' preserved one of the state's most important natural areas and resolved ,a difficult and sometimes " acrimonious dispute over the future of : ,'the Illinois dam maintaining the water level of Wisconsin's Twin Lakes ' r region. The Nature Conservancy, a national, private, non-profit land ' conservation organization with a local office in Chicago, plans to sell the four-foot wide dam to the Village of Twin Lakes. a Wisconsin municipality. The remaining wetland acreage will be conveyed to the McHenry County Conservation "'district, an Illinois public agency which preserves land. The Con- *1 servation district will dedicate the site as an Illinois Nature Preserve. Nature Preserve status offers land the highest form of protection available m* under Illinois state law. *i In a statewide inventory of natural areas, the Lake Elizabeth site was J; identified by scientists as one of the •" finest undisturbed wetlands remaining in the entire state. The area harbors, a variety of rare and Jr endangered plant species and a number of special wetland com- munity types such as alkaline fen and Jy* acidic bog. In recent years, the natural area and dam were at the center of a controversy involving public and elected officials from Illinois and Wisconsin. The small dam controls the water levels of Wisconsin's Lake Marie and Lake Elizabeth, popular recreational sites for residents of both states, and thus affects the look of the shorelines of these two relatively shallow lakes. Under a 15-year written agreement between the Village of Twin Lakes and the dam's owner, Richmond Hun ters, the village had been granted acc ess to and control of the dam. This agreement, however, was to have expired in September, 1983. If the dam were removed after expiration of the agreement, as was contemplated by its owner in recent years, Wisconsin residents feared that the water levels in the lakes would drop, draining some wetland and partly replacing the attractive shoreline of the lake with exposed mudflats. After much discussion and research, it was determined that neither the states of Wisconsin, Illinois nor the federal government was willing or able to commit resources to solve the problem. Ap proximately eight months ago, Rich mond Hunters, which also owns the natural area, offered to sign an option to sell the entire property, including the dam, to the Nature Conservancy. Once the option had been signed, the Conservancy worked out an agreement to sell the dam to the Village of Twin Lakes and the natural area to the McHenry County Con servation district. The entire tran saction is expected to close within 60 days. "We are extremely pleased to have played a role in preserving this im portant natural area and in finding a viable solution to the dispute over the dam," said Waid R. Vanderpoel, chairman of the Illinois chapter of The Nature Conservancy. "This project quite clearly demonstrates the cooperative effort between the public and private sectors which is vital in our challenge to preserve this country's outstanding natural heritage." Since its inception in the 1950s, the Nature Conservancy has preserved nearly 2 million acres of land across the country. Today, the Conservancy, supported by 156,000 members nationwide, owns and manages the largest private nature sanctuary system in the world. The Nature Conservancy maintains a national office in Arlington, Vir., and an Illinois Field office at 79 W. Monroe, Suite 706, Chicago, 111., 60603. Low-sodium Foods Instead of pickles and catsup, try using lettuce, tomato and a slice of onion on sandwiches. Raw fruits and vegetables, unsalted nuts and pop corn, and unsalted crackers are great low-sodium snack foods. Choose low- sodium meats such as beef, chicken and fish and use less salt in cooking them. Some labels on food containers slate the amount of sodium in a serving. It's important to read labels carefully if you are on a low-sodium diet prescribed by a doctor. If you have high blood pressure, follow your doctor's advice about diet, weight control and medication. If you're taking pills to keep your blood pressure down, keep taking them. Cutting down on sodium or losing weight may help, but let your doctor help you decide what's best for you. spurgeons New!
