Man, that was good eatin! A Repeater: Clerk: "It's an educational toy, Madam, designed to adjust a child to live in the world today. Any way he puts it together, it's wrong." Can a fellow be blamed for thinking the world is cockeyed? Saw a large ad showing women's styles for next fall. Summer slipped past me, somehow My mother wrote this in . a scrap- book she kept for me: If you're trying to keep up with the Joneses, take it easy, in a few years you'll meet them coming bade. -Chicago Trib- In our study of birds, we learn some habits of the ostrich. The mama and the papa take turns settin' on the eggs. The hen sits by day. Her mate takes over nights. Suppose that is to keep the old boy from wandering. Little boys who tell lies travel half- fare. -Anonymous- Just a look at cucumbers in a store give me a pain in the back. Think I was in seventh grade in school when I planted a small patch and did real well financially. The next year I decided to expand and rented a half acre on a special share basis. Now, if you don't think a half acre of cucumbers is enormous, think again. I hired eight boys to help with the picking. They were all on hand for the first day after a rainy spell. If you ever "picked pickles", you know how rough your hands get and how your back aches. Within an hour, my help had all quit and walked along the road toward home. What to do? It was a wet season and growth was fast. My uncle agreed to help - for a good share of the profits. Fortunately, a hired man with a strong back and a weak mind was pressed into service. That was all for those half acre patches. Three ducks have come back to our back forty after being absent all winter. For small areas, gardening in containers expands your growing potential and allows you to be more flexible with your planting schemes. For large areas, pots of shrubs or flowers add interest and accent. Plants in containers have the advantage of mobility; you can move containers to follow die light or change your landscape plan as often as you change your mind. Containers can be rotated to ensure better and more uniform growth. Care is easier, usually requiring less bending over. Insect, disease and weed control is easier, and the growing media will be as good as you can make it. Best of all, container gardening allows you to garden where you couldn't ordinarily to lend that "extra touch" -- on porches, patios, or steps, by the pool, along driveways and paths, and in the skies with hanging baskets. The American Association of Nurserymen has advice to enhance your enjoyment of container plantings. They like corn. Lots of it. Have no idea if they plan to nest in our yard All we know is that another eternal triangle exists. Two males waddle along behind a female. Remember way back when you had a date with a special flame, you brought ho- a box of candy? Before punch boards were banned as gambling, you sometimes won a box. More than a half century ago, a big advertising scheme had everybody wondering what the Eskimo Pie would lode like. (X course, you know it turned out to be a goodly portion of ice cream frozen on a stick and dipped in creamy chocolate. Cost -- 10 cents. Now comes Easter. There was a time when ladies wouldn't venture forth on Easter Sunday morning without a new hat. Some were doozies. Fruit on the top. Think little girls wore numbers called sailor hats with ribbons hanging down. Too often the rains came. Come to think of it -- what happened to those flapperish little Eugenie hats? Some of those were good fa* a laugh. Easter is a glorious time. May hard boiled eggs and soft turned words be part of your joys and blessings. Easter Services At Faith Church Faith Presbyterian church, located at the intersection of Lincoln and Chapel Hill roads across from the drive-in theater, invites the McHenry community to any of its three Easter Sunday services to be held at 6:30, 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. The 6:30 sunrise service will feature the sharing of family /Com munion around tables, thus, providing an intimate setting. Dr. Snyder will preach on the subject, "The Greatest Miracle". The 8:30 and 10:45 services will feature a cantata sung by the Faith church choir, directed by Melinda Davis. The cantata includes stirring music by John Peterson and will set the stage for Dr. Snyder's sermon. Easter comes from the old English word "Eastre", which was the name of the goddess of spring and dawn. As such, Easter represents the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the dawning of new hope and life because of that resurrection. The public is invited to share ifl this joyous celebration. The average pencil will write about 30,000 words in its lifetime.
