"Then I realized some others can't leave, even if they wanted to, so I decided to spotlight the concept that we don't appreci­ ate freedom till it's gone." The Statue of Liberty disap­ pearance, filmed last Septem­ ber, required three' nights' work for 300 people. "Magic must be done in a controlled atmosphere," says Copperfield, who is the special's producer. "Usually it's performed on stage with a proscenium and the audience sitting where we want them. If we'd had boats all around the statue it would be like sit­ ting backstage at a magic show." Situating the audience for this event was the toughest task of the Statue of Liberty finale, However, the 20 tour­ ists. chosen at random from the Liberty Island crowd, were all convinced that Copperfield had made the statue disappear and reappear. Television viewers will have the added benefit of watching the act on radar. When the curtain is raised to cover the statue, a blip is still seen on the screen. Moments later, the blip disappears -- as does the statue -- only to resume when Miss Liberty reappears. The 26-year-old has previ­ ously done the same thing to a Ferrari, and a Lear jet. and before the hour-long "The Magic of David Copperfield V" disappears. Copperfield will attempt -- and it's OK to say he'll succeed -- in making the Statue of Liberty disap­ pear. Don't fear. Copperfield is such a nice guy he has made all the aforementioned reappear, including "Dallas" and 225-ton Miss Liberty. This is his fifth CBS special and in each he has withstood the pressure of topping his previ­ ous achievements.
