Penza, 51, has coached the Hurricanes to a 7-2 record in 1981 and a 4-5 record last year. He previously coached at Assumption Catholic High School in Wisconsin Rapids (Wis.) where' he recorded a 68-12-2 record over 11 seasons that included five conference championships. He was an All American lineman during his senior year at Notre Dame where he earned three letters. While playing for the Fighting Irish, his teams recorded a 24-4-2 record and were ranked No. 1 in the nation for nine weeks. He was named as captain of the North team in the North-South Shriners All-Star game in Miami. Penza was drafted by the Pittsburg Steelers and started his first two games before sustaining a knee injury which forced him to leave /the pro ranks. While in the Marines, Penza coached two teams to 12-0 and 11-1 reocords at Quantico (Va.) and Camp Pendleton, respectively. Penza served as a mayor of Wisconsin Rapids for 10 years and has since served on othe state and national committees. Marian Assistant Coach Bill Carroll joins Penza on the Red Devils staff. Because of the recent low attendance at the girls state tournament and lack of interest, the IHSA is about to move the girls tourney ahead of the boys tournament. Will the girls season begin a week earlier? Will they be forced to cut down on their schedule? Another change is being considered to have the state finals a four team affair, with all games being played one day. Indiana has this set up with various regionals, sectionals and you name it; to funnel the four teams to the finals. Back in 1941, due to wartime conditions, Illinois had a four team state tourney. Golf coach, Chuck Cuda remembers well, as he was a member of the state champs Morton of Cicero. There may be a good reason for such thought, but a lot of schools are going to be unhappy with that type of format. It used to be the sweet sixteen, now it is the elite eight if the plan goes through. Money can't be the reason, as the IHSA picks up a nice bit of change with all the regionals, sectionals, super-sectionals and finals at the Assembly Hall It will be interesting to see if this is just some wild idea, or if they plan to go through with this plan. ******** If the weather breaks and the snow melts, a lot Of outdoor Activity will take place the next week at McHenry High School. On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbitt Dan Boland's boys' track team were to have been at Johnsburg yesterday, while the girls were to travel to Grant. The track mentor is anxious to see what his lads can do outdoors. They finished second to Crystal Lake Central indoors last week. Brian Wilson's baseball team will open their season Monday against North Suburban power Libertyville. With outdoor practice limited, Wilson likewise is anxious to see wht is in store ahead for him this season. Gary Gray has swept the tennis courts of snow many times this spring and is awaiting the varisty quadrangular tomorrow. Hoffman Estates, Rockford Boylan, and Schaumburg, along with the Warriors, will compete. Pat Wirtz's Lady Warriors softball team was to have opened at Grant yesterday, and may have if weather permitted. Not much outdoor Jim Popovich and his badminton team have no weather problems, but after playing Fremd yesterday, will have taken the holidays off and won't be back in action until the April 13. Sonny Shanahan's water polo team had a big meet Tuesday hosting probably the largest school in the state -- Bill Day's alma mater LaGrange. Having defeated state powers Highland Park and Evanston, what is one more power to the popular coach. This is a dull period for high school sports, and I know sports editor Mike Lamb is as anxious as I am to get going with the spring schedule. We hope by next week we will have some reporting to give you fans. Take Two Of Three Matches BARB ANSELL The Warriors lady badminton team clinched two straight matches late last week before faoing Fremd at home, this Thursday. The Warriors will take a small break for Easter. The Warriors first victory came when they defeated Elgin Larkin in five out of eight matches. The Lady Warriors claimed all but one of the single matches and the number one double position captured a win. "It felt good to win," said McHenry Coach Jim Popovich. "The girls got out there and worked for the win. They really earned our first one." McHenry's number one singles player Donna Hoch downed Cathy Lovejoy 11-7,11-1. Number two singles Jill Kuhns defeated Glenna Crichton 11-7,11-6. While Cahr Einweck playing number three singles dumped Sara Marblestone 11-2, 2-0. Lynne Zurblis starting at number four singles lost a close match 7-11, 8-11. Although Zurblis lost her first competitive match, Popovich was proud of her performance. "Lynne had only one day of practice before the match, because she was coming off a two week ankle injury. But she almost pulled out a win. Lynne stuck with her opponent throughout the entire match." In the number one doubles spot, Valerie Boeldt and Stephanie Hankins overtook Edda Eberius and Linda Oine 15-1, 15-2 for their resounding win. But the team of Sheri Cristy and Patti Henderson lost a heartbreaking match in the tie breaker 2-15, 15-4, 6- 15. Popovich felt the number two doubles match could have gone (the win) either way. "The girls had tied the game at 6-6 when Sheri twisted her ankle, but still wanted to finish the game. The injury mentally threw the rest of the match." McHenry then took on the challenge of North Chicago and shut out their opponents, capturing all seven matches. Number one singles player Donna Hoch won 11-1, 2-0, number two singles went to McHenry's Jill Kuhns 11-6,11-0, and Char Einwenk secured the number three doubles victory by defeating Rhonda Idlett 11-1, 11-5. The doubles teams had just as much lp.ck with partners Val Boeldt and Stephanie Hankins dumping Kelly Gainer and Cherise Haggerty 15-6,15- 9. While the number two doubles team of Sheri Cristy and Pattie Henderson downing Natasha Dachas and Jorgi Reese 15-13, 15-9. The number three doubles combination of Bobbie Orin and Margie Dixon also won 15-2, 15-4. Popovich felt the team had come a long way since the first meeting and was especially pleased with the win by Orin and Dixon. "Bobbie and Margie faced a tough team and they helt tough to clinch the win," said Popovich. Popovich said despite the win, he saw areas where the girls could still improve. "I didn't think we played as tough against North Chicago as we could have. I noticed a bit of let down, and the girls shouldn't underestimate their opponents, because as soon as they do they catch you." The Lady Warriors did take a hard loss to the Conant badminton team, losing all but the number one doubles match. The only McHenry victors were Stephanie Hankins and Valerie Boeldt who went three rounds before defeating Kim Kiernicki and Teresa Marshall 15-4, 15-18, 18-16. Popovich highly praised the girls for their efforts. "The girls deserve a lot of credit. The win was up in the air until the very end. But Stephanie and Valerie made a strategy change that paid-off." The change the girls made, was to hit deep clears on the final three shots. The Conant team weakly returned the clears and allowed the Warrior team to come from behind to win the match. The victories give the Wariors a 2-3 overall record. Popovich says he and several of the players will be traveling to Countryside to watch the National Badminton Championships. Popovich feels the girls will gain much from their attendance. "The best players will be here, and this gives the girls an opportunity to see the sport at its best." The Warriors will resume action on Tuesday, April 12. Warriors Win (Continued Jrom page 6) the period. McHeny took a 12-9 into halftime. The scoring slowed down a bit in the third period. LaGrange outscored the Warriors for the first time, 3-2. The two goals were scored by Schaffer and Miller. One of the goals scored by LaGrange, was fired in at the halfway mark in the pool by Creelman. To preserve the win, the Warriors outscored LaGrange 4-2 in the final period. Cepulis led the Warriors in scoring with seven goals and Schaffer scored five. According to Shanahan, his team has three potentially dangerous scorers. Each one has led in Warrior scoring each game. "In this game, they really con centrated on keeping Schaffer from scoring. Cepulis got the ball more." Shanahan was also pleased to see the turnover-steal ratio in the Warriors favor again. The Warriors committed eight turnovers, but came up with 15 steals. While Cepulis led in scoring, Schaffer led in assists with six. Goalie John Neumann made 10 saves, while giving up 14 goals.
