PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, APRIL 8.1983 -- /EARL WALSH So I Hear Vernon Knox, who has Florida sand in his shoes, sent a book called "The Game of Words". It is a fine book, but Vernon's idea of us finding some "jewels" in it for S.I.H. requires care. Copyrights, you know. Vernon winds up his letter with this: "About Lent - I'm glad it is almost over. This year I gave up oatmeal and mountain climbing. It wasn't easy for an old goat, hut guess I'll survive." Now we find an article telling how to lose your double chin and improve your looks. What about the third chin? Also read a note that says: "If your nose itches, you will have a fight." In my recollection, the saying was, "You will kiss a fool". Through the grapevine, we obtained this picture of the now famous Bill Thomas and his sweet-smiling wife. One of these days we hope to meet them with Jake and Tillie Stoffel for lunch. That will be a fun day. rd MR. AND MRS. BILL THOMAS MS-M7I OHM COFrtfTOS*. To those who know our subject, his real name has become a nickname, William R. Anyhow, one of those little birds who give me news, reports our man and his wife are new readers of this columh. He will celebrate his 70th birthday next Wednesday. Happy Birthday! -- S.I.H. speaking. Mark Justen took Glenn Peterson' with him and headed for the hills in the southwest last week to do some fishing. After finding a boat to hold "Big Pete", they set sail for deeper waters. From what I hear, it is a good thing they chose a big boat. The big man pulled so many lunkers into the boat they had to be towed to shore. If I only had a picture. I've had basketball up to my bald Spot. Now I'm ready for baseball. During the tournaments, I heard h two coaches talking about how they hoped to get certain opposing players out via the foul route. That brought me right back to my annual thoughts about the rules of the game. What other sport puts players out for infractions? In football, they can stop off yardage in penalties all af ternoon without giving a player the bounce. 1 I have mentioned other sports and Wanted on before so will spare you. For my part, I want to see full strength on the floor for both teams. Free throws are penalties enough. We have all seen some dirty politics in our days, but none worse than we are seeing in this Chicago Mayoral race. Smear the other guy seems to be the name of the game. Met Harold Buchert (Eddie's younger brother), his wife and good looking daughter from the north -- Richmond. They are Plaindealer readers and gave this young columnist words of encouragement that made my day. Nice people. All the Bucherts are nice people. I drive through Richmond oc casionally, but the town doesn't seem the same. The Kruse Hardware store and corner Drug store are gone. Antique shops have taken the town by storm. Memorial Hall also rings a bell in my memory. That is where we played basketball. One game I will never forget. Rich mond's star, Rotnour, and "Red" Winkel tangled and went down on the floor. Richmond had a broad-shouldered player (think his name was Skinkel -- later a switchman on the Nor thwestern Railroad). The big fellow got into the act only to make peace. I thought it was two on one so dived in to help my pal Winkel. Romo Bobb, one of our teachers, was the referee. No fouls were called and nobody was put out of the game. "Sharkey" Grant, with a winter growth of whiskers and looking tougher than 17 Dempseys, sat on the sidelines and threatened to get us after the game. He was there with a few others when our cold shower was finished and we were ready to leave. Coach Stringer surveyed the situation and gave us instructions, "Keep quiet. We will march out single file. I will go first and the Irishman will follow me." I looked at our coach and said, "Thanks". We took some unkind words, but no further punishment. Scared? Sure we were. Don and June Hoenes called on us Tuesday and brought a bottle of that famous maple syrup from their ranch in Michigan. Sorry we were just leaving for an appointment. Would have enjoyed a visit. We were glad to meet and greet Frances Hughes and her another at lunch time. I won't call them "old" friends. "Longtime" friends sounds better. That on-the-ball nurse, Joanne Houghton, in Dr. Alvary's office had a snappy retort when I told her of all my housework. "Do you do windows?" Many who have traced their an- cesters back for several generations in this country find that their families started out in the New England states. Ms. Wolf, well known speaker on many topics of interest to the genealogist, has chosen New England Research as her lecture for this month. Ms. Natalie Wolf is associated with Genealogy Unlimited in Buffalo Grove. A small donation will be asked to help defray the cost of the program. There has been a good response shown by the general public in the society's proposal to have reprints made of the 1872 Combination Atlas- Plat-map Book for McHenry County, and the 1885 History Of McHenry County. These two books are not only of particular interest to anyone with early McHenry county ancestry, but will also be of interest to anyone with an interest in the county history. The publication committee would like to hear from anyone else who might be interested in one or both of these books. They may call Patricia Kuscevich at 344-4225. There is no obligation to purchase the book by making the phone call. The call will simply give an indication of interest. "That which is brief, if it be good, is good twice over." Spanish proverb HOW TO FEEL A LOT BETTER ABOUT INCOME TAXES NEXT APRIL 15TH Some of the tax-saving ideas you'll learn at our free seminar are simple (but you'd be shocked at how many investors overlook them). Some are complicated and require careful planning. Some apply to virtually all investors, while others apply only to those in special situations. Some are earmarked for investors of more modest means. Others, frankly, are for the rich. (But they're fascinating!) And, best of all, there are many ideas you can put to work right now in time to save money on your 1983 income taxes, and for many years to come. Tax-deferred retirement plans. You'll learn how to defer tax payments with an IRA. How to select the retirement plan that best suits your needs and goals. The different plans that are available: IRA, SEP, Keogh and 403(b). And how you can start a plan right now and save on next year's taxes. Municipal securities. You'll learn about the convenience and tax savings offered by these securities, and how a smaller tax-free yield can equator exceed ahigher taxable yield. You'll also find out how you can invest in municipals with a relatively small amount of capital and still retain quite a bit of liquidity. Tax investments. This is especially for investors in tax brackets above 49%. You'll learn how to use tax investments, or "shelters," to earn profits and establish tax losses and write-offs. Two months ago, President Reagan told relatives of 2,494 men still unaccounted for in Southeast Asia: "Your govern ment is attentive. The in telligence assets of the United States are fully focused on this issue." Since the Revolutionary War, America has recognized the extreme hardships ex perienced by those held prisoner during times of war. Similarly, we have recognized the suffering by families of these men and women and those still missing. This year, Congress has designated April 9, as National POW-MIA Recognition Day. On this day, we are asked to recognize the special debt owed to former prisoners of war, those still missing, and their families.
