Warrior second baseman Michele Kennedy was a dead duck ai second base during the seventh inning of the McHenry-Johnsburg showdown Monday. Shortstop Michele Swartzloff waits for Kennedy STAFF PHOTO -- MIKE LAMB Jacobs Defeat Skyhawks Tennis Team An unpleasant surprise hit John- sburg tennis coach Dennis Spraetz, and it helped Jacobs squeeze pass the Skyhawks 3-2 Monday. While number one singles player Dan Kiernman was having an easy time with Bob Nargard of Jacobs, 6-1 6-2, number two singles player Paul Hendrixson was having some dif ficulty. He lost to Scott Johnson, 6-2 7- 5. "Paul Hendrixson losing his match was very unexpected," said Spraetz. "I don't think you will see that happen very often." Spraetz said he was very unhappy with the^opening meet loss. The Skyhawks other win came from their number one doubles team of John Hendrixson and Shaun Clarke. They defeated Kirk Hurgen and Kent Lefever, 6-1 6-4. Softball Opener Loose Warriors Rip Skyhawks, 7-1 MIKE LAMB JOHNSBURG -- McHenry Warrior softball coach, Pat Wirtz, just told his players before their game against the Johnsburg Skyhawks to play loose and don't worry. He said this was just a "spring training game." His Warriors did just that, as their cool-handed play gave them v a 7-1 opening game victory Monday. Winning pitcher Cissy Pinkstaff held the Skyhawks to six hits for her first 1983 win. Wirtz was especially pleased with his pitcher because of the illegal distance between the mound and home plate at the Johnsburg diamond. It was determine during the game that the distance was six feet longer than the IHSA softball regulation requires. Another prohibiting factor was the mud. "It's a nice one to win in a spring opener," said Wirtz. "Cissy did a fine job despite the mud. Cissy had a hard time on the mound with the mud. A lot of her pitches looked like changeups, but they weren't. She just couldn't get anything on it." Bob Schmitt, skipper of the Skyhawk squad, was displeased with the lack of hits. "It's something we have to work on. It's our weak point. We just haven't had the time outside." A spark in the Warrior offense and defense was centerfielder Renee Mezzano. She made two key defensive plays and hit safely twice. "Renee Mezzano looked tough out in the outfield," said Wirtz. Mezzano made both defensive gems in the fourth inning. She made a running catch of a sinking line-drive off the bat of Michele Swartloff for the first out. She also nailed Patty Bartmann at thirdbase from a centerfield for the third out. After a scoreless first inning, the Warriors struck first with two runs in the second inning. Sarah Prust led off the inning with a walk and Cindi Kinsala reached on a fielder's choice. Mezzano singled to load the bases. Warrior First imseman Chris Keevil patiently waits for the ball to make the out. STAFF PHOTO -- MIKE LAMB Terri Rossetti followed with a blooper to. centerfield which Theresa Hauck dropped and both Prust and Kinsala scored. Johnsburg Baseball Team Wins Opener (Continued from pog* 6) Outfiedler Jeff Jayko was the first Johnsburg hitter to hit off Miller. Jayko blooped a single into rightfield in the third inning. He advanced to second on a ground out by Jeff Fowler and Hurckes knocked him in with a single to right for a 1-0 lead. Miller struckout Shane Hanson to end the inning. All total, Miller struckout nine Johnsburg hitters. "Paul pitched a fine game. We were just not hitting," said Carter. "Defensivley we did a fine job, base stealing we did a fine job. We did hit everything well besides hitting.' Johnsburg's two other runs came in the sixth inning. Hanson led off the inning with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Wayne Kollenkark. Kollenkark advanced to second on a steal and to third with a wild pitch. Miller then walked Tim Adams, but got the next two batters to fly out and strikout. Thirdbase man Tom Huemann did the damage to Miller with a double into centerfield, scoring both Kollenkark and Adams. Miller ended the scoring threat by striking out Jeff Preston for the third out. "Those three runs in the sixth in ning took a load off out shoulders," PAGE 7 - PLA1NDEALER - WEDNESDAY. APRIL 13,1983% Mezzano was later cut-down at third base on a fielder's choice by Patty Johnson. Chris Keevil singled and Pinkstaff walked, but Karen Kar- pavicius flied out to end the scoring threat. The Skyhawks came back with one " run in their half of the second. With one out, Swartzloff singled and Jane Pecucci walked. Swartzloff scored off a single by Bartmann. But, Bartmann was cut-down at secondbase and the next two batters failed to hit and the inning ended 2-1. Skyhawk pitcher, Kathy Butler, held the Warriors in the third inning, but disaster struck in the fourth. The Warriors scored four runs to help put the game awya early. Kris Keevil walked and advanced to third on a wild pitch and stolen base. Pinkstaff walked and Karpavicius singled to knock in Keevil. Karpavicus stole second and Prust followed with a single to score Pinkstaff and Kar pavicius. The next two Warrjor batters failed to reach, but Cindi Gaines knocked in the fourth run with a single. Gaines finished the evening with three hits on three at-bats. She also knocked in two runs. The final run came in the seventh. Gaines left off with a single and stole second. Michele Keprady followed with a single. Gaines scored on a fielding error by second baseman C&ndy Guetzloff. "I thought our outfield play was solid," said Wirtz. "I think as the weather gets wartner, the hitting is going to improve." Both Karpavicius and Mezzano banged out two hits for the Warriors to along with Gaines three hits. The Skyhawks hits were spread out among six batters. said Meyers. "It's a heck of good start for our kids. It was a good team effort. "We had seven hits. As far as I know, that's the most hits a Johnsburg team has ever had in an opening game." Some scout for op posing teams and some scout for the major leagues. There will also be another scout hi$ting the McHenry and Woodstock area baseball diamonds during the high school season. Russ Williams, coach of the McHenry American Legion team, plans to attend a great number of McHenry, Johnsburg, Woodstock and Marian Central games. Why? to find interested and talented players to play on his 1983 baseball team. Years past, Williams has had a difficult time rounding up a full team. He would like to change that trend. "We're mainly looking for some good hitting and throwing," said Williams. "We sit and watch the games and see who might be in terested in playing during the sum mer. We try to get some kind of verbal committment from them (interested players)." Eligible players have to be 18-years- old or younger according to Williams. Anybody who lives in the McHenry, Johnsburg or Woodstock area can, play on the McHenry squad. Wood- ! stock doesn't have a team, so that is why McHenry can nab players from Woodstock. Williams says he would like to carry „ 18 players on the team, but last yeaj" only 12 players played for McHenry., Williams explained that they played , six games a week last summer, whiclv is a heavy schedule for a small squad. He plans to only play three games a week this season. "We'll have a couple general-' tryouts and practices before the - season starts, but the Illinois High' School Association rules prohibit us from organizing anything until the high school season ends." Williams also added the team is getting new uniforms and the last ; time that happend they won the County Championship.
