Purple Martins Arrive In Area Just like the swallows that return to Capistrano, so have the purple martins returned to northern Illinois, and more specifically, on April 13, in Antioch according to Maryanne Kaht, member of the Illinois Audubon society. The purple martin is the largest member of the swallow family that daily consumes its weight in insects, predominately mosquitos. Mrs. Kaht reports two important factors necessary to attract purple martins: location of the bird house and sparrow control. The Lake and M c H e n r y c o u n t y chapters of the Illinois Audubon society have also been involved in a project to promote the return of the eastern bluebird. These cavity nesting birds which have been on the en dangered species list have fledged 50 young throughout this area during 1982. Anyone interested in information about at tracting purple martins in the backyard or saving the eastern bluebird, is asked to call Mrs. Kaht at 312-395- 1898. It Could Brake Your Neck Disc brakes on modern cars may lock up when driv ers pump them to slow down or stop on icy roads. Auto safety researchers at the Tex as Transportation Institute have discovered that the new disc brakes do not release as quickly as drum brakes and if pumped, may not release at all, causing lockup and re sulting in skidding. Vehicles with disc brakes should be squeezed with a slow, steady pressure and held. Drive safely. Save 15% on your auto insurance.
