lVMiK (i - ri.AINDEALEK - WEDNESDAY. MAY 18,1983 MIKE LAMB , CARPENTERSVILLE - To no one's surprise, Crystal Lake Central easily captured the Fox Valley Conference boys' track title Friday. The real battle developed for bragging rights of beng runnerup to the Tigers. V The McHenry Warrior pulled off a surprise and ended up the te&m to capture second place. The strong season finish came under the heels of a Warrior slump which made the second place even sweeter. "I was hoping for it, but it was a surprise," said McHenry Coach Dan Boland on the second place. "I thought they could place in the con ference meet anywhere from second to eighth. After Central, it was a wide open race. "I'm pleased. I thought the kids ran very well, especially after coming off not so good dual meets." The Tigers completely blew the whole field away with 177 1-3 points. McHenry scored 84 points and Cary- Grove was next with 81 1-3. Dundee and Crown followed with 49, Wood stock 451-3, Crystal Lake South 40 and Jacobs 32. . V. Besides taking second for the meet, McHenry pulled off another surprise in the 800 meter relay. The team of Mladen Rudman, Randy Lively, Jim Shaver and Denny Shaver ran behind the favored Crystal Lake Central team for entire race until the end. Denny Shaver spurted up to Steve Moore during the last leg as the finish line approached, and Shaver just nipped Moore at the finish line. The McHenry team finished in a time of 1:33.3 and Central was timed at 1:33.4. It would be McHenry's only event title on the day. And it came on an event which even Boland wasn't even expecting. With the weather, a couple injuries; we just didn't score a whole lot more," said Dan Boland, coach of the Warriors, Thomas' discus mark was a girls school record for McHenry. Kathy Kuetemeyer of Crystal South was the winner with a throw of 109-8. "I thought Kelly threw real well. It's a nice way for a senior to end up," said Dan Boland, coach of the Warriors. Boland was also happy with Saunders' performance. "Delia ran as hard as she could. She was a little disappointed with ho* place. But Delia shouldn't be disappointed. She ran as hard as she could." Molly Burd of B&rrington took' the two mile with a ' tiffte of 11:31.4. *««« CARPENTERSVILLE - Things could have gone a lot better for the McHenry girls track team at the district meet at Crown High School, but they didn't. The Lady Warriors were shutout in the state qualifying department for 1983. Only two girls were able to place for McHenry. Kelly Sue Thomas took a fourth place in the discus with a throw of 96-6 and Delia Saunders took a fifth in the two mile with a 11:56. Things went very well for the Crown Vikings on their home turf. They captured the 16-team meet with 53% points. Warriors Saturday was a problem that has plagued the Warriors all season long -- no hitting. South threw their best two aces at McHenry, Chris Kelly and Kevin Murphy. McHenry, on the other hand, came into the two game stand with a pit ching shortage. Tim Evans was unable to make the trip and Pat Dunn is still recuperating from an injury. Mike Bauml started the first game, despite a sore arm. He continued to pitch without giving up a walk. He left after four innings giving up three runs. Steve Aim replaced him. Two of the three runs Bauml gave up were unearned. The Warriors scored their only run CRYSTAL LAKE SOUTH -- While the Crystal Lake South Gators did a lot of good for their fate in the Fox Valley Conference baseball standings, they didn't do McHenry any favors. The FVC leading Gators knocked off the Warriors twicfe'.in a doubleheader Saturday 6-1 and 9-2. The two wins keeps the Gators on top with a 10-2 conference record and McHenry fell to 5-7. "I was hoping for at least a split," said Brian Wilson, coach of the Warriors. "Now I'm hoping for a sweep of Crystal Lake Central to end the season with a 7-7 record." The main problem that plagued the Skyhawks Received Needed Pitching In Warren Win title with a time of 5:32. Both times were Johnsburg school records. Hurckes said Christie had a commanding lefed throughout the mile race. / Christie also took a third in Ule discus with a heave of 95 feet. She did not qualify for state in that event because only the first two finishers in each event qualify. "Christie has been our strong point all year long. To double in the mile and half mile -- it's tough to do. She will have a great! shot in both at sta{e. She has as good as chance as anybody. V Hiller was second in the long jump at 15-4y4. _ Hurckes said he was given a pleasant surprise from another freshman. Vickie DuBeau took a fourth in the 400 meter dash and a fifth place in the high jump with a LISLE -- The Johnsburg girls' track team will be sending two girls to the Illinois High School Association girls trqck meet next Saturday as a result of last Saturday's district meet at Lisle. Junior Missy Christie in the mile and half-mile and freshman Bev Hiller in the long jump will make th§ trip. As a team, Johnsburg finished fourth in the 18-team meet with 20 points. Luther South was the winner with 53 points, Ifh- maculate Conception was next with 39 and Lisle was third with batters to line out and ground out to third base. The runs scored when Greg Indelcolle singled and left fielder Jeff Preston missed the ball on the pick up. Ward scored and In- delacolle ended up on second. He scored on Danny Bauma's single. Phil Fontana safely hit into a fielder's choice, but Mike Ptasienski struckout to end the inning. Besides Banaszynski's per formance, Meyers is proud of the whole team's performance during this last part of the season. "The last part of the season has been fun. They are not going through the motions. They have worked hard." The Skyhawks offense got going early in the first inning. Jeff Fowler reached on a walk and Mike Hurckes play their second regional game on Thursday. "Steve pitched a nice ball game," said Johnsburg skipper, Jim Meyers. "I was pretty pleased. Steve is our number three pitcher. I'm saving our number one and two pitchers for Marian and Grant." The only trouble innings for Banaszynski were the third and sixth innings. Warren scored one of their runs in the third. Banasynski gave up twvo straight walks to start the inning, before getting Eric Sellers to fly out. Both runners were then erased on plays at second base. The damage occurred when Kenard Ward singled and Ozzie Larsen doubled, knocking in Ward. Again, Banasynski led off the sixth with a walk, but got the next two reached on an error by the second baseman. Joe Majercik struckout and Jim Bentz hit into fielder's choice, but Mark Hiller responded with a double to right field, scoring two runs. Eric Bear struckout to end the inning. Warren's starting pitcher, Dave Jahnke, kept the Johnsburg attack silent for a couple innings until the fourth. Eric Bear led off the inning with a single and Tom Huemann singled. Rob Worzala popped up a bunt attempt and Jahnke made a diving catch at the first base line for the first out. Preston then singled, knocking in Bear. Fowler also singled, knocking in Huemann, but Preston was cut down at third base. The inning ended with Hurdces flying out. (Continued on pag* 7) JOHNSBURG -- With four games scheduled in four days, the Johnsburg Skyhawk baseball team needed a good solid pitching performance out of its number three pitcher in the rotation. Steve Banaszynski gave it to his teammates, pitching a five-hitter against Warren Monday for a 4-3 Skyhawk win. It was Johnsburg's ihird conference win in a row and raises their record in the Northwest Suburban Conference to 6-7. The. Skyhawks have also won five of their last seven for a 9-8 overall record "It was all Chicago schools and to place fourth is an outstanding achievement," said Bill Hurckes, coach of the Skyhawks.
