MAY 18.1983 Rusty Nail Score 41 Runs In 2 Game Sweep PATWIRTZ The Rusty Nail Inn opened the 1983 men's softball season in successful fashion as they slammed out 47 hits and scored 41 runs in their doubleheader victory. The victims were Doherty's 18-5 and Jewel Park 23-4. The Nail opened the scoring in their annual confrontation with Doherty's with three runs in the top of the first. Doherty's retaliated with five runs as seven of the first eight men in the lineup scattered singles throughout the Knox Park softball field. However, a lineout doubleplay to Nail pitcher John Connell finished the Doherty's rally. Connell then scattered four Doherty singles during the remaining six in­ nings and the Nail scored 14 runs from the fifth through seventh innings as they broke the game wide open-to win 18-5. Rick Wakitsch had four hits in­ cluding a pair of doubles and three RBI's to lead Rusty Nail Inn. Don Bentz knocked in five runs with two hits and a pair of sacrifice flies. John Walkington had three hits, scored four runs and included an inside the park homerun. Jim Zasada and Gary Sch- mitt had three hits each while Doug Freund scored four runs and included an inside the park homerun. With the score 3-0 going into the top of the fifth, two Huemann infield errors plus a dropped fly in the out­ field brought in two Johnsburg tallies. In the sixth, after Huemann's had narrowed the Businessmen lead to 5-4, two more miscues opened the floodgates as Johnsburg scored six runs for a commanding 11-4 lead. Irish DeCiccio, winning pitcher for Johnsburg, led the Businessmen with three hits including a triple and pair of RBI's. Wayne Hiller, Jerry Brodin, Myron Bentz and Eric Schiller added two hits each. Tom Blenner and John Pitzen had two hits each for Huemann's Water Conditioning. With one out and the bases loaded, Norm Leschuck hit a game winning sacrifice fly to win the game. Steve Schwarz had two of the six Jewel hits. Steve Sanders had the big hit -- a three run inside the park homerun. The winners also took advantage of eight base on balls, one intentional. Mike Reardon had three hits to pace Lakeside Inn. Jim Szamlewski added two hits and two RBI's. Rick Bielski and Steve Schmitt had two hits each. STAFF PHOTO -- MIKE LAMB R-T Dees Win On Seventh Inning Rally Donna Hoch Bows Out After Three Rounds At State BARBANSELL WINNETKA -- McHenry's number one singles competitor, Donna Hoch lasted three rounds in the state badminton tournament before being eliminated from competition last weekend. Hoch met Nancy White, the Deerfield district singles winner, in her opening round match. "I felt she was extremely nervous and never quite got into the game," said Coach Jim Popovich. "Donna, battled back during her second set with White," said Popovich. But the battle was not enough to send the match into an extra game. Hoch lost to White in straight sets 11-0,11-7. In the second round, Hoch found herself in the consolation bracket , where she faced Mary Ellen Ball, a number two Singles player from DeKalb. "Donna played this match very well," praised Popovich. "It was a good, solid second match and she played up to her abilities." Hoch defeated Ball 11-2, 11-6. Glenbard Smith's Kim Cullen, was Hoch's next opponent. But Hoch never seem to have control in the match and failed to win a game, ending her bid for a place at state. Hoch lost to Cullen 11-2, 11-5. * Popovich felt the state competition was the climax to Hoch's season. "Donna had a good season. She deserves a lot of credit for keeping her nose to the grindstone and working her way to state. "Throughout the season, Donna has worked to improve her abiltiy to meet the obstacles of competition, and I feel she has come out better because of it," added Popovich.k Two run leads are difficult to protect in 16-inch softball. Smitty's Tap found out the hard way last Thursday during men's 16-inch soft- ball action at the V.F.W. ballpark. Smitty's Tap was protecting a 7-5 lead going into the seventh inning. Smitty's Tap failed to score in the top half of the inning, so all R.T. Dees needed was two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie. They did one run better and won the game 8-7. Tom Bruce and Steve Zolleck led off the seventh for the winning R.T. Dees with singles and Paul Johnson reached first when the first baseman dropped the ball. With bases loaded, A1 Lyne grounded out to the second baseman, scoring one run. Frank Sch­ midt and Greg Schmidt then followed with walks which forced Zolleck to score the tying run. That set up the winning run scoring single by Todd Cariveau. Cariveau led R.T. Dees in hitting with three hits on four appearances. He was credited with a double, two singles and one RBI. Smitty's Tap took a 6-1 lead in the second inning. A total of 11 runners batted for Smitty's Tap. Four errors, a double and two singles helped the Smitty's cause. R.T. Dees only run of the inning was scored on a triple to centerfield by Hank Koeck scoring Greg Schmidt who had doubled previously. Smitty's Tap would score one more time in the fourth on three consecutive singles. R.T. Dees scored two more in the third and fifth. John Kastin and Mike Warner led Smitty's Tap with two hits a piece and Kastin also scored twice. George Hiller 11 St. Regis 9 While R.T. Dees rally succeeded, St. Regis rally failed. Down 11-8, St. Regis only was able to score one run in the seventh inning in losing to George Hiller 11-9. George Hiller helped their cause with a two insurance runs in the sixth inning. The Skyhawks defeated the Rams 4-0. Besides not allowing any hits or runs, Hurckes only walked five and struckout seven. It was the first no-hitter by John­ sburg pitcher in the school's brief history. "He breezed along pretty well," said Meyers. "We were not thinking no-hitter until the fifth and sixth in­ nings.
