Heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death in the United States, and hypertension is related to more th^n 600,000 of these deaths each year. One out of every seven Americans an estimated 35 million -- has high blood pressure, but more than a third of these hypertensive Americans don't even know they have it. Of those who do know, about a third are not being treated. There are two kinds of hypertension: secon dary and essential. The kind that can be traced to a specific cause is secondary hypertension and accounts for five to 10 percent of all cases. Secondary hypertension may occur as a result of kidney disease, or pinching of the main artery leading from the heart (this is a hereditary condition) or tumors (NO the adrenal glands located on each kidney. Hypertension due to stKb-: causes is usually curable. However, 'the other kind of hypertension - essential hypertension- is the most common form of high blood pressure. It is not called essential hypertension because it is necessary but because there is no known cause. Hypertension is a poor choice of words, for it leads many people to believe that high blood pressure occurs in only those people who tend to be nervous and tense. Contrary to popular opinion, tests conducted by several research groups do not reveal a ISLAND LAKE MEDICAL SPACE Available from 800 to 2600 sq. ft. Men are prone to get high blood pressure more often than women and usually in a more severe form. Pregnant women, or those taking birth control pills, may develop hypertension. Women taking the pill are more likely to get hypertension later in life as well. This is true even if their blood pressure returns to normal after pregnancy or when they stop taking the pills. Blacks are twice as likely to develop hypertension as are whites, and they get it more severely, especially men. The elderly have more problems with high blood pressure. Obese persons are prone to get it, but then again, there are a lot of overweight people who never get hypertension. Actually, anyone can develop hypertension-even children. Hypertension usually begins to be a problem, however, between ages 30 to 50. It is unusual for there to be any evident symptoms until the blood pressure becomes very high. Even then, symptoms may not occur, and a person may not have any warning prior to a heart attack,* stroke or kidney disease. If symptoms such as headaches, dizziness or nosebleed occur, they may not necessarily mean you have hypertension. These symptoms could be associated with other diseases. The only sure way you can know if you have high blood pressure is to have your blood pressure measured. Operation CARE will, involve saturation patrol during the maximum traffic times of the Memorial day holiday weekend on al interstate routes, the entire tollwaj system and many U.S. and Illinois routes in Illinois. It will begin at 6 p.m. Friday,. May 27, and end at midnight Monday, May 30. v The interstates, Illinois and U.S. highways involved in District 2 are I- 55, U.S. 41, U.S. 12, and Illinois 47. Capt. Richard L. Stone, commander of the Elgin District which has the responsibility of patrolling Lake, McHenry, DuPage, Kane and DeKalb counties, is encouraging the motoring public to utilitize seat belts and other child restraining devices to reduce injuries in case of an accident. He added that troopers will be stopping vehicles with passengers who obscure the driver's clear view of the highway or interfere with the driver's mechanism or safe control of the vehicle. In promotion of Operation CARE, the Illinois Department of Tran sportation is sponsoring a "Courtesy Coffee Break" program at eight in terstate rest stop locations in Illinois during the Memorial Day Holiday period. The rest stops are located as follows: 1-57 Monee; 1-57 Buckley; 1-57 Anna; I-80Minooka; 1-80 Princeton; I- 74 Goodfield; 1-55 Springfield; 1-70 Altamont. \ Ronald J. Miller, Illinois State Police superintendent,' said Illinois will join with surrounding states this Memorial day weekend in im plementing Operation CARE (Combined Accident Reduction Ef fort.) . Operation CARE is a multi-state program of interstate highway patrol and enforcement. The main objective is to reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents with the secondary objective of reducing the severity of those accidents which do occur. For the 1983 program, enforcement efforts will be concentrated on the following: > Identify and remove from the high ways, drinking and intoxicated drivers. Detect and enforce equipment and moving violations perpetrated by second division vehicles and other large commercial vehicles. Enforcement of the national maximum speed limit of 55 mph for all vehicles. Establish high visibility patrol activities as a deterrent factor on designated CARE highways during the selected holiday periods. Demonstrate the harmonious cooperation in traffic efforts with other states to obtain voluntary compliance and eliminate hazardous violations.
