L£ FIFTY YEARS AGO , (Takeft from the files of May 25,1933) The school year is rapidly' drawing to a close for the schools of this city and only one more week remains until graduation. The graduating class this year consists of 33 members and is one of the largest classes to leave the high school. Mary Althoff is valedictorian of her class, having the highest average for her four years of work. Margaret Larkin is second and will give the salutatory address at graduation. Sixty-eight babies were entered in the baby conference at the Methodist church at Woodstock. Ferol Martin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton .Martin, West McHenry . received the grand prire. The Utile curly-haired girl was entered in the class of one year to two years in which she also won first place scoring 95. A new place of business was opened on Green street by Lee Kercher, in his own building. It has been named "My Place", and will serve light lunches. 3.2 beer and soft drinks of all kindfc. The room has teen very attractively fitted up with tables which will seat about 30 or 40 customers. Cigars and cigarettes will be carried in stock. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 29,1958) At a meeting of the trustees of McHfenry hospital, a tentative date of Nov. 15, 1958, was set for com­ mencement of practical steps to get the planned 24-bed addition under way. To facilitate raising the needed cash, an advisory board has been formed headed by, Virgil Pollock of McHenry. More than 100 members of the faculties of the public schools in McHenry and their guests gathered in the high school cafeteria to honor Supt. C.H. Duker on his retirement. Myrtle Procter acted as mistress of ceremonies and interspersed humor and sentiment in a manner which provided several sparks of amusement to an occasion which by its nature tended to bring out the emotional qualities of those attending. A vote of residents of McHenry township resulted in approval of an annual tax not to exceed 167 for the purpose of constructing or main­ taining gravel, rock, macadam and other hard roads or re-paving earth roads by various means. The vote was 71 in favor and 27 opposed. Quick action and the efficiency of McHenry's fire, department once again resulted in saving of property when flames threatened to destroy Rainbow Cleaners. The McHenry Legion team traveled to Marengo and returned victorious with a 6-4 win under their belts. It was a good start for new coach, Jack Thomas, and his assistant, Jack Vick. There are only four returning starters from last year's'team which went downstate and finished with a 20-3 record. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 23, 1973) David Ritthaler and Barb Goddin were crowned king and queen of the McHenry high school prom held at the Abbey in Wisconsin. Joann L. Schabow of McHenry graduated Magna Cum Laude from St. Louis university, St. Louis, Mo., with a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology, College of Arts and Sciences. Kathy Sand of McHenry Junior high school, won first prize for grades 5 and 6 in the county Earth Week '73 poster contest sponsored by the McHenry County Defenders. Robert Myers, owner of the trout ponds on Route 120, reported that unknown persons removed from 800 to 1,000 pounds of rainbow trout from one of the ponds. (Taken from the files of May 25,1973) David Scott Fletcher of McHenry was honored in an awards day at Austin Peay State university, Clarksville, Tenn. As graduating senior with the highest achievement in the major field of Economics, he received the National Observer Student Achievement award. Alderman Jerome Rogers appeared before the City Council and distributed information sheets on a new police salary schedule prepared by him and asked that it be given consideration. Two laymen, Don McMillan and LaVerne Hill, from First Baptist church, McHenry, are part of a nine- man construction team returning from the West Indies, where they worked through the Foreign Mission board of the Southern Baptist con­ vention, helping a Baptist congregation start a new church building. t# 1 > J " I 3 1 * JL IN MEMORIAL DAY PARADE-Preparations are in progress for entering the Vacation Bible school float in the Wonder Lake Memorial day parade by the Wonder Lake Bible church workers. "Lollipop Dragon" is even helping to construct the float. She is making certain it is the best float ever for her to ride on as she gives out candy and invitations to remind all the children five years old through eighth grade that VBS will be June 21 through June 29 from 9 to 12:15 p.m. at the Wonder Lake Bible church. Dance Theatre In Concert The Judith Svalander Dance theatre will present a spring concert Satur­ day, May 28, at 8 p.m. at Hemmens auditorium in Elgin. The concert will feature a blend of classical ballet, modern jazz, and character dance. The Chicago Brass Ensemble will accompany Judith Svalander and her partner, Erol Pamay, in a set of Renaissance dances, adding the excitement of live music to the con­ cert evening. • During the rousing opening, Memorial Day Festival, in wnich tne entire company dances to Gershwin's "Strike up the Band", a special ap­ pearance will be made by the dynamic tap dancers Robert Wells and Rosemary Nadolsky, who per­ form in Chicago. Included in the program will be a lively new jazz dance choreographed for the company girls by Pamela Bedford of Chicago Dance Medium. Another side of this young company's versatility will be displayed in Austrian Suite, a series of frolicking and fun dances performed to traditional Austrian folk tunes which features the groups' unique character style. Rounding out the evening will be the ballet Gaite Parisiennfi. set in the night life of old Paris -- a story of romance, convivial dancing, and perpetual high spirits. / Judith Svalander Dapce theatre is a not-for-profit dance cdimpany based in Crystal Lake, which features dancers from northern Illinois in performance with professional artists and guest soloists. The company performs throughout the area in lecture- demonstrations, dance festivals, and concerts. Several of the dancers are from the McHenry area. Tickets will be available at the box office before the performance.
