If your car, recreational vehicle or truck isn't ready for hot, summer travel, service it before you start; Getting emergency repairs on an ex pressway is difficult. Allow plenty of time for unexpected delays, and plan to drive a comfortable number of hours or miles each day. Even an hour in the driver's seat can bring on "highway hypnosis," a condition of drowsiness brought on by monotony, sound of the wind, tires on the pavement, and steady hum of the engine. Make sure you stop at least every two hours for a break. But don't stop on the shoulder. If you are using medication, check with your doctor to see how it can affect your driving. Never use "pep pills" when you are driving. Emotional stress can be very fatiguing. If you are irritated by traffic or road conditions or angry with someone, get off the road. And most im portantly, don't drink and drive. Alcohol impairs vision, hearing, judgment, reaction time, awareness and coordination. Once you have had a few drinks, you may feel less tense and inhibited but, behind the wheel, you will become tired rapidly, especially at night. If you drink, let someone else drive. Remember, driving your car is work. It demands your constant attention. A laugh, a look, a gesture Cut deep into a soul, Thoughtless words and postures Taking a dreadful toll. Our victims may be silent, Retreat with a wounded mind. 'All the things they dreamed to do Are gone in a spinning bind. Why can't we be kind and gentle Even when we don't agree? There may be something new inside Brought out for us to see. At times we should just be quiet, Hear with an open mind. Put aside our own convictions Surprise! the beauty we find.
