IS Morning Stretch WVmves Exciting year for Jr. Miss By Andy Noble Susan Hammett of Hattiesburg, Miss, has just experi enced the most exciting year of her life. Last June she won the title of America's Junior Miss -- and was awarded $34,000 in college scholarship money. On Tuesday, June 21, she'll turn over her title to the new America's Junior Miss for 1983. The winner will be select ed from 52 finalists during the CBS telecast of the finals from Mobile, Ala. Michael Landon, star of "Little House on the Prairie," will again host the one-hour special. "I really didn't know what to expect when I won the title last year. I didn't expect to win. I was just so happy to be selected Mississippi's Junior Miss and go to Mobile for the finals," says Miss Hammett. During her one-year reign, Miss Hammett and her chap eron, Mrs. Mildred Hodson, covered more than 40,000 miles all across America. Only two days after being selected America's Junior Miss, Miss Hammett flew to New York to appear on "The Today Show." "I thought I would be nervous appearing on national TV," Miss Hammett says, "but Jane Pauley and the program's staff put me at ease. It was a very exciting moment." Miss Hammett was honored during the year'at the Academy of Achievement, was the Queen of the Senior Bowl football game, and attended the Chicagofest cele bration: She has just completed her first year at Louisiana State University. She's planning a career in speech pathology and audiology, and hopes to join her father, Dr. Lawrence Hammett, in his clinic in Hattiesburg after graduation. ©19B3Cotnpulog 815/385-6000 i pi » •TfCTTTt PONTIAC CADILLAC 1 1 1 2 F R O N T S T . , ( R T 3 1 ) M c H E N R Y , I L "LARGE ENOUGH TO SERVE YOU...
