Robert Shaw, Christopher Qummer, Nigel Davenport. 1969 Good news, culture fans. If you haven't come across it already, USA has a new series this month -- "Kung Fu Theater." Every Sunday, this series will feature a different two-hour film about the martial arts. If you aren't familiar with this kind of film, kung fu movies are live-action cartoons. The good guys win and the bad guys lose. In the process of winning, the good guys break up many, many bad guys. Basically, the plot of a kung fu movie falls one of two ways. One is the revenge scenario. The star's girlfriend, wife, mother or brother has been murdered by an evil gang and he seeks revenge. Often, in this kind of rtoovie, the leader of the gang is the martial artist's teacher who has turned to evil. This sets up a dramatic final battle between pupil and mas ter -- sort of like "Return of the Jedi." The probjem with this scenario is that it can be awfully serious. The result is like a roadrunner cartoon with a "point." The other kind of kung fu film is much more fun. It usual ly involves a couple of guys of questionable honesty who are out for themselves and some how end up on the side of good. This sort of movie doesn't take itself seriously a! all. In the end, good triumphs and the heroes are still alive, . but somehow they aren't any better than when they started. They go off into the sunset or gloom like Claude Rains and Humphrey Bogart in "Casablanca." One of the better videos to hit cable is David Van Tiegham's "Ear to the Ground," which aired recently on USA's "Nightflight." Van Tiegham, whose forte is get ting music out a variety of toys and household implements, takes a pair of drumsticks and literally plays everything, including sidewalks, phone booths, . trash baskets and metal gratings, on the streets of New York. Van Tiegham combines a whimsical and nostalgic sense of humor with elements of George Burnt Star* in "Oh God." dance as well as his consider able percussive skill for a much more interesting video than the usual rock band in stupid cos tumes lip-syncing, their most recent single. Some upcoming cable films: "Oh God" (June 27, HBO) -- This one stars octogenarian George Burns as God If you love Burns, you'll probably like' this movie. If not, you'll find that the joke runs thin pretty fast. "Becket" (June 29, Cinemax) -- Richard Burton and Peter 0'Toole star in this film about the English King Henry II, who appoints a friend, Becket. as the Arch bishop of Canterbury, thinking that he will be his yes-man. The king finds out otherwise. An excellent movie -- both thfe king (Burton) and Becket (O'Toole) are well-played. "The Boat" (June 30, Cinemax) -- A German mov ie dubbed in English about life on a German submarine during World War II. This was one of last year's better films. H dep icts the hardships and disillu sionment of the German crew who know that- their-chances of living through the war are about zero, (virtually every German l>boat was sunk dur ing WW II). You really feel the claustrophobia of a crew of men living for months in the cramped space of the sub. ©1983 Compulog
