Kathleen Cullen's the one By Connie PaBsalacqua Of Amanda Wexler Middle- ton MacFadden Spaulding, the character she plays on "Guiding Light." actress Kathleen Cullen says: "I don't think there is another role on daytime that has gone through as many metamorphoses as Amanda." And how! Amanda first came to Springfield as a wallflower who spent endless hours practicing classical piano. Her cold, neurotic mother, who hated men, had a great deal to do with the break-up of her first marriage. Amanda was frigid. Her next husband fled from her neurotic posses- siveness. She learned the identity of her "real" par­ ents during the murder trial of her own mother, and shortly thereafter, had a miscarriage^ Then she fell in love with her new mother's husband and watched him being pushed off a cliff to his death. Now. she's a suc­ cessful tycoon who is tak­ ing care of her mother's abandoned child, whose father is her dead lover. "It's been a wonderful opportunity to play her," says Miss Cullen. Some actresses would have broken under the stress of playing the ulti­ mate soap opera sufferer for four years. It's a true tribute to both Miss Cullen's stamina and acting talent that she still makes Kathleen Cullen, with her daughter, Alexis Amanda a believable char­ acter. Miss Cullen has always been steadfast with her own ambitions. Born in Oak Park, III., she grew up as the only girl in a family of seven. "I was a princess and I love it." she laughs. She attended college in Chicago where she studied communicative disorders. But she loved theater and decided to take a chance and go in that difficult direction with her career. , After a few years of struggling in New York, she landed the role of Amanda Of her struggling years-she says: "I felt there was noth­ ing I couldn't do." This is much her philoso­ phy in playing her soap role, which is usually awash with tears.
