Not Leigh Kirkland, who has emerged on "Ryan's Hope" as a clear- cut heroine in the six months she has been Jack Fenelli's unconventional lover. Leigh has turned out to be a winner, thanks mainly to Felicity LaFor- tune, the unconventionally named actress who plays her. - Miss LaFortune is forthright herself in describ ing Leigh's appeal: "She's fairly aggressive, sexually and otherwise, and pretty sure of herself. She's a fun person and pretty realis tic." Miss LaFortune is so realistic herself that she's probably the only soap newcomer who admits to watching a soap prior to her employment on one. "I always watched 'Ryan's Hope' -- and I actually cried awhile back when Estelle died on 'All My Children'." Interestingly, Miss LaFor- tune's main career focus is opera. Gifted with a mezzo- soprano voice, she started her professional career with a small opera company in her native Chicago, and then went on to the San Francisco and Santa Fe Opera Companies. Felicity LaFortune She turned to acting, but failed at first to make it big in New York. A role in a Chicago production turned out to be pivotal in her career. She was playing a housewife in an Italian Marxist farce when an agent introduced herself, saying, "I think I can line you up for a role for which you might have the range." That led to an audition with ABC and then to the role of Leigh. Miss LaFor tune's operatic talents were written into the role and she periodically sings on the show. She's often asked about her romantic-sounding name, which, by the way, is her given "name. ' "My father is French, and a great aunt on his side was named 'Felicity,-' " she explains. "I know it sounds like a name out of bur lesque or from a morality play, but it's mine." ©1M3Compuk>g
