During the 1960s, 'Jones played with some of John Coltrane's great­ est bands. Since then, he has been mostly leading his own band. Jones generates enough raw power when he plays to light up the entire East Coast. r He is incredibly strong and skillful. Also on "Night Flight" that same evening will be a video of the Los Angeles band the Blasters. They were originally associated with the Los Ange­ les hardcore bands because they emerged from that city's New Music scene at about the same time. However, the Blasters resemble bands like Black Flag and the Circle Jerks mostly in the energy level of the music, but not much in the music itself. The Blasters combine rocka­ billy. R & B, blues and other "roots" music. They are con­ sciously concerned with mak­ ing an American music that speaks to our past and pres­ ent. They do this with lots of passion and excitement. On Wednesday, July 27, Daryl Hall and John Oates will be guest VJs on MTV. What they'll play hasn't been announced, but both Hall and Oates are big fans of soul music. For Alfred Hitchcock fans, the Saturday, July 30 episode of USA's "The Alfred Hitch­ cock Hour" finds an average woman, who is touring the States with her English parents, getting mixed up with a stolen car ring. It seems she got into the wrong car at a din­ er and is now on her way to the Mexican border. Michael Wild­ ing and Anna Lee are featured. Some Spotlight movies: "Let's Do It Again" (July 24) -- A comedy about box­ ing with Bill Cosby. Like Cosby's "Uptown Saturday Night," this isn't a great film, just a good film. The acting and the jokes are modest, but fun. In other words, not a masterpiece, but well worth watching. "Montenegro" (July 29) -- A Yugoslavian movie about migrant workers In Europe. Lots of sex and decadence, but not much action. It's visu­ ally slick, but boring. "Grease II" (July 28) -- First you had a Broadway musical with no plot. Then you had a movie with a plot that had little to do with the play. Now you have a sequel to the movie with little to do with the first movie.
