PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, JULY 22,1983 EARL WALSH So I Hear * We may be old folks to Ken and ' Marie Diedrich, but they never forget us. They come to see us and bring choice bits. Good kids! won't keep some drivers from parking over the lines. to Squires at first base to pick off Cleveland's Pat Tabler, it brought back memories of George Jackson doing the same thing when the Johnsburg Tigers won the state championship at Elgin. All through the years people have been telling me tales and saying, "Put that in your column". Some things I was happy to use. Others had to be checked out and some were No-Nos. " Pitying the poor birds, who look thirsty, Alvina set out a pan of water in the back forty. Haven't seen any of them take a drink--but do they splash! The way farmers roll up the hay these days, I suppose nobody has to go into the hay mow. The man in the mow Used to come out of there looking like -he had jumped in the milk house water tank. One time I wrote: "What is so rare as a day in June unless the sight of a car parked squarely between the diagonal lines?" The late Dr. Chamberlin caught me with two tires parked smack on the line and spread the word to "Muggsy" Wattles and other tormentors. Since I am no longer sports editor, there is one alleged omission to be checked out. Sometimes I advise readers to send their problems to Dear Abby or Ann Landers. Many times I have referred people to Public Pulse to air their views. Saw Morrie Clark getting a haircut and wished I had some of that crop Larry Nimsgern was cutting off. Fred Meyer, a Yankee lover, was invited to Comiskey Park last week and saw how the other half lives. I really didn't need a haircut, but my better half didn't want me to join that distinguished group going to Wrigley Field Thursday looking like a hippy. Imagine a country boy sitting in a posh, glass-enclosed, air conditioned area where food, drinks and all the comforts are provided. Only at White Sox Park-- How does your garden grow? For "Just call me Rip" it must be growing real good, judging by the variety of choice vegetables he brought to our house. The usual requests come from people who claim to have been treated unfairly. . One fellow said,"That so- and -so talked behind my back to make himself look good and make me look bad. I have a notion to hit him in the nose." All I could say was, "Be sure you are right and big enough, then pop away". It is good to see the streets and high ways being marked with white and yellow paint. It helps. As this is written, a Chicago team named the White Sox is in first place. Or, did you notice? Of course, all the paint in the world When Carlton Fisk whipped the ball Old Timers summed up such por- blems by soothing hurt feelings with this: "Don't worry. Chickens come home to roost". Virginia Kreutzer and her daughter, Cheryl Dehn, laughed when they saw me step out the back door bedecked in a loud apron with wording across the front "King of the House." They didn't realize that this special apron gives me the privilege of working in the kitchen. « -- The many friends of Don Hoenes will be sorry to learn that he is hospitalized. Mir. Blake has added much new equipment and is now prepared to do all kinds of automobile repair work in addition to his battery business. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 22,1943) Afc. Vandalena Diedrich, better known as "Van", was McHenry's first member of the Women's Army Auxiliary corps, and began training in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., in the early spring. Since then she has been transferred to Louisiana, but recently was sent back to Fort Oglethorpe, her old home, to attend motor transport school. She has a brother, Louis, stationed at Indiantown Gap. Pa. A McHenry farmer shared honors with several others on test in D.H.I.A. No. I in this community. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 24,1958) Several hundred parishioners witnessed the laying of the cor nerstone, July 20, at Christ the King church of Wonder Lake. The Rev. Edward Coakley, pastor of St. Patrick's parish, McHenry, presided at the ceremony, with the Rev. James A. Vanderpool, pastor of Christ the King, assisting. vThe occasion climaxed 10 years « planning and hard work toward the erection of a new parish plant which includes a beautiful new church, rectory and school. After petitions and requests over a long period of time, the City Council amended the parking meter or dinance to provide for the operation of meters on Friday nights between the hours of 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Harold J. A mild rush to the super markets to stock up on meat was reported in McHenry. Part of the rush was believed to have resulted from predictions that there would. be a shortage, the other part to the fact that Phase IV allows meat prices, with the exception of beef, to rise. 10 11 45 46 SO S3 r 44 L r 55 Junior Olympics > r Saturday, July 23,9-12 noon Name- Ages 7-11 EVENTS Age- •••'r 'btr" w" ""0 ** -- Sneaker Toss Sack Race Shuttle Race 30-yard dash (7-9 yrs.) 50-yard da^h (10-11 yrs.) 7 .
