I Maybe it's the summer heat - or maybe it's the nostalgic feeling that always accompanies Fiesta week - but whatever the reason, it seems easier to dwell on good memories than fe make plans for tomorrow. *;a belated birthday tribute by our former sixth grade teacher, which arrived with our newspaper mail this week, is certainly something we will ffie away proudly among our an niversary keepsakes. --M.L. Schoenholtz came to McHenry's Landmark school to teach bis first class more years ago than we choose to remember. With en thusiasm for his first job behind the desk, he later admitted, with candor, that (like most others in his profession) he learned more that year than he had learned in college. Ex perience was then, and continues to be, the greatest teacher. "Mike", as he became known through his long career in McHenry, was one of the biggest boosters of the Community's Boy Scout program and one of its hardest workers. His teaching career extended into administration and before retirement he served as assistant superintendent in High School District 156. •'One of the benefits of the newspaper business is occasional contacts with friends from the past. The tribute was a; surprise bonus. ' Maybe it was Old Hotne^W^elTr for the same mail brought a message from Virginia Engeln Thomas of Grand Rapids, Mich. t-"For many years since I've been away from McHenry I have promised myself to subscribe to 'our' paper, piow, since coming home last year for my fiftieth class (MCHS) reunion, I have finally decided that I would like td keep in touch with the happenings in my old home town. Put me on your mailing list". |"lf anyone has doubt that there is something special about McHenry, he Could not begin to explain those doubts (Continued on pog» 18) . Special • guest for the 1983 Fiesta Days parade will be TV's own Gar field Goose, who will perform a one- half-hour show immediately following the parade. Stan's Casanova band will provide musical interludes and the rionship final rounds of Fiesta's Family Feuds will take place at 4:30 &m. Polka music and food and average service mil continue until 6 p.m., when "McB^nry: Seasons Four!" closes its Fiesta doors and prepares for the following year. One of Saturday's highlights will be the bargains offered in local stores. Inside sidewalk sales are happening all over town Friday, but Saturday they all come out onto the street along with the music, the food, and the merriment it generates. There are no Vandalism Damage At By Carol A. Stevens Nearly %1,000 damage to the Johnsburg Middle school roof has been caused by vandals. This includes the loss of freon for the school cooling system as well as damage to sdme trees and to the roof itself caused by the boys walking on it. The repair of this damage as well as future prevention of such vandalism were topics of discussion at the regular Johnsburg school district meeting held earlier this month. The problem first came to the at tention of the board about three months ago when beer cans and pieces of carpeting were discovered on the roof, usually after weekends. An attempt was made to dissuade future use of the roof as a place to party by stringing barbed wire around the perimeter of the roof. However, one board member overheard several boys say that the barbed wire wouldn't stop them from using the roof. Soon after, it was discovered that the three boys, all high school sophomores enrolled in Johnsburg high school, simply cut the wire in order to gain access to the root. The McHenry County Sheriff's department was called and .the in vestigation turned over to George Scheibe, a juvenile officer, who "did an excellent job," according to the school board. The boys confessed, were booked, fingerprinted and photographed, and turned over to the McHenry County Court Services department Their parents were also contacted, and one of the' parents has contacted the board to apologize for the boy's "behavior. The Court Services has encouraged the school board to set up a rehabilitation program for the of fenders that would include planting trees to replace those damaged during better bargains throughout the year. Plenty of 2-for-l sales and next-to- giveaway prices are promised all over town. A variety of athletics, art. theater, music, dancing, frnitn§ ami judging are all included in the final days of Fiesta week. Two field trips--the Cubs game on Wednesday and the Milwaukee Zoo on Thursday, present mid-week get away opportunities. The Chicago Sting Soccer camp takes place at East campus from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, training 6-18- year-olds to be increasingly proficient players. Wednesday brings a Football Jamboree at McCracken field at 7:30 p.m. as well as Teen night at Pearl Causes School the recent vandalism, as well as other work that needs to be done. However, the insurance company has already been contacted and apprised of the situation, and they may wish to pursue this through other legal channels, which may include suing the parents for reimbursement. While the board would prefer to follow the recommendations of the Court Services, they feel they need to wait for a response from the in surance company. ̂ (Continued on pogo It) street park at 7:30 p.m. More athletics for all ages are slated Thursday when the parking lot of Petersen park becomes a roller rink at 6:30 p.m. McCracken field 6 p.m. Meanwhile, another chapter of Family Feud takes place at Pearl street park at 6:30 p.m., before the special Fiesta Days band concert which features the classic ballet of the Judy Svalander Dance theater. Friday evening is traditionally Theme Night, this year presenting pre-show entertainment during the dinner prelude. Dinner menus will represent "McHenry: Seasons Four" and will be available along with the entertainment beginning at 6 p.m. The special Theme night production written, directed, and produced by A1 Smith and entitled "The Time, the Place, and the Girl", begins at 8:15 p.m. The two-hour show features the talents of local actors and musicians who have worked together so often and so well that they are becoming a company unto themselves. Meanwhile the center of town, Pearl street park, presents another setting of bargains: aesthetic bargains: no- cost entertainment provided by the David Adler House of Folk Music and a no-cost exhibit of superior, original art work in many mediums. At this third annual "Art in the Park", a special children's hands-on workshop will occur all day for young budding artists. Pre-registration is not required. Banjo-Beer night follows at 7 p.m. Bill Bailey's 'string-busin' Banjo band is back by popular demand. Forage For Flying Flags Some people collect coins; others collect stamps. Some people collect flags, but most people collect things legally. Two McHenry men each face three charges of theft under $300 for stealing flags from the greens of area golf courses, a flag from a boat and a flag from the front of a volunteer fire department in Trevor, Wis.
