"There's always something else to get done." The breakfast menu includes pancakes, eggs and bacon, toast, rolls, coffee and milk. For lunch anddinner, there is Italian beef, hamburgers, barbecue, hot dogs, cheese sandwiches, potato chips, homemade pie, ice cream and soft drinks. There's usually a dozen people in the booth at one time, with three separate shifts each day. "We don't serve dinners," Fasse says. •It's all fast food." There are 200 Grange members in the county and about 3,500 statewide. The Grange is the oldest organisation in the country, dating bade to 1667. The food tent is the primary fund-raiser, earning the Grange several thousand dollars last year, after expenses. The money goes toward administrative expenses and charities. The Grange donates to CARE Inc., research for the deaf, 4-H and nursing homes. "We're an organization that helps other people," Fasse says. Grange members also work the gates. The money they're paid is donated back to the fair committee to make the event bet ter in the future. Fasse says $3,800 was donated in 1982. Preparations for the fair begin about a month in advance. Committees are formed and food prices compared. Fasse says the Grange tries to keep costs competitive. "You have to stayfjelow McDonald's,' he adds with a smile, "otherwise, you'n going to be in trouble." Fasse, 66, works at the fairgrounds every day from 9 a.m. to 10:96 pjn. Each night the grills and roastera must be clean ed and perishable food refrigerated. The group also must adhere to strict health standards. Athough the work is hard, fellowship flourishes. "Lots of people we dont see all during the year, we see working at the food tent," says Fasse's wife, Mary.
