J PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER • WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16, 1163 EARL WALSH So I Hear After devoting my last column to early memories of 48 years, it is time to catch up on other thoughts and happenings. There was a big headline last week about former Mayor Byrne paying her husband $186,000 for a year in an advisory capacity. What else is new? Doesn't the woman always pay? Dear SIH: Aging housewife faced 'with machine: "Push that button • move that lever. Now let's see what hap pens." Yours, Kathleen Brown Marie Niesen has joined the Cane Club. Illness didn't take away her pretty smile. Back to school sales are posted all ova*. That's enough to spoil a kid's vacation. Dan Justen must drive up and down our street. One day he noticed we had only one small bag of garbage out front and decided Alvina must make me eat everything on my plate and on the table. Another day the digger man drove past and noted our new sod and retainer ties. That gave him a story that we were building a high fence between us and Virginia Kreutzer. (Trouble maker!) It was at the Bill Hiller funeral that we marvelled all over again about the beauty of St. John's church in John- sburg. It was ancestors who built the church, then came such stalwart men as Bill Hiller who maintained the structure and carried on the spiritual side through the years. "Rip" Roepke's garden is still going strong. We hadn't had any sweet corn, but found some choice fears in the sack that came to our dodt. Must do something for "Rip", but my garden isn't doing so good or well or whatever. And -- more yellow beans at our door. One guess. The history of McHenry tells us about a steamship hauling passengers and freight on Fox River before the railroad came in the year 1854. A little bird told me that Larry Seborg, a real Cub fan, has switched about 180 degrees toward the White Sox. The pleasant voice at the other end of the line was Mildred Zuelsdorf, (I don't know her married name) who grew up in McHenry. Mildred was here from Michigan to visit her daughter, Patty Doherty, and family. It is so nice to get such calls. Our 48th birthday with the Plain- dealer was not forgotten by Co workers. There was fun. Now, off and wingin' toward 49. OLD SAYINGS (Some old, some older). Many hands make light work. The better the day the better the deed. Love me, love my dog.
