In its final report on 1990 marriage data, the National Center for Health Statistics said the marriage rate was 10.6 for each 1,000 Americans. The total of almost 2.4 million marriages in 1980 was up 3 percent from 1979, the previous high. Other provisional reports already released by the agency indicated the number of mar riages continued to climb in 1981 and 1982. The report said 1980 also marked the fifth straight year the number of marriages in creased over the previous year's total. Tracing trends in marriage between 1970 and 1980, the report said 44 percent of all mar riages involved men and women who had been married before, up from 31 percent in 1970. About 69 percent of 1980's grooms were older than their brides, 11 percent were the same age and 20 percent were younger, the report said. In 1980, the report said, 42 of the 50 states reported an increased number of marriages. The western states recorded the largest in crease, 5 percent. A study of statistics gathered in 42 states also showed two-thirds of those who married in 1980 had never been married before. A decade earlier,, three-quarters of all brides and grooms were marrying for the first time. Three-quarters of all 1980 brides were under 30 years of age, the report said. Some 95 per cent of those marrying for the first time were under 30, and 90 percent of those who had been married before and divorced were under 45.
