South Korea is looking for the least expen­ sive feed grain and probably will purchase rye from Canada, the exporters said. The grain is for shipment in late September. (UPI) - Indiana continued to rank eighth among the 50 states in agricultural exports during the 1982 fiscal year, agricultural statisticians at Purdue University said. Indiana, which also ranked eighth in 1981, placed fourth in exports of soybeans and soy­ bean products and fifth in exports of feedgrains and feedgrain products. Total Indiana exports for the fiscal year, however, were down from $2 billion in 1981 to $1.6 billion last year, the statisticians said. Illinois led the nation in exports, ranking first in soybean and leedgrain shipments, the statisticians said. Iowa Was a close second. Total U.S. exports of fafiQ products during fiscal 1982 totaled $39.1 billion, compared with $43.8 billion in fiscal year 1981, a drop of 11 per­ cent, the statisticians said. Corn sale totals reported WASHINGTON (UPI) - The United State has sold 158,496 tons of corn to Japan for delivery during the 1983-84 marketing year, the U.S. Agriculture Department said. The marketing year for corn begins Oct. 1. The USDA also said 101,600 tons of U.S. corn was sold for delivery during 1983-84 to unknown destinations. Beef loss equals $36 head URBANA, 111. (UPI) - The average Illinois beef feeder has lost $36 per head of cattle per year since 1980, experts said. That figure was calculated by University of Illinois farm management specialists based on a study of records from 59 operations for the years 1980 through 1982. « The study showed the average beef farmer sold 476 head per year making his total annual cash loss about $17,000 per farm. "These results reflect the difficulty many Il­ linois beef feeders are having trying to con­ tinue their feeding operations," said Del Wilkin, University of Illinois extension specialist. Kansas crop situation 'very bad' TOPEKA, Kansas (UPI) -- The crop situa­ tion in Kansas is "very bad," especially in row crop and dryland counties, Governor John Carlin said. Carlin said he has written to Agriculture Secretary John Block, calling the state's dryland corn crop a "total loss." He also said it was extremely doubtful much of the soybean crop can be salvaged and that the sorghum crop is "showing great stress." Carlin said the state's livestock industry is suffering, with cattle weight gains down due to the lack of third and fourth cuttings of hay. US looking to be barley runner up WASHINGTON (UPI) -- The United States could take Australia's place as the second largest supplier of barley to Japan, the U.S. Agriculture Department said. Australia cannot supply the 650,000 tons of barley stipulated in its 1982-83 contract with Japan, the USDA said. As a result, 1983-84 U.S. barley exports to Japan could "increase substantially" from the 140,000 tons supplied in 1982-83. Australian exports are expected to reach 300,000 tons in 1983-84. Canada remains the largest supplier of barley to Japan. Trade agreement affect uncertain WASHINGTON (UPI) - Uruguay and Taiwan have reportedly signed a long-term trade agreement, but the agreement is not expected to substantially affect trade between the U.S. and Taiwan, USDA said today in a foreign agricultural circular on export markets for U.S. grains. The agreement was believed to cover the calendar years 1983-86 and to include corn, sorghum, wheat and other commodities. - USDA said annual taiwanese purchases could reach 60,000 tonnes of corn, 35,000 to 50,000 of sorghum and 50,000 of wheat. In 1982-83, total Taiwanese corn and sorghum imports were about 5 million tons, while wheat imports were about 650,000. The U.S. supplied nearly 90 pet of Taiwan's total grain import needs that year.
