' j ORIOLE «htrt«N M'AUli 4-I'l.AlNDKAI.KK- WKDNKSDAY, AUGUST 31; lfM r ' Fartfily Walk-a-tHori A walk-a-thon to promote family- centered activity will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18. at the McHenry County Conservation District's Glacial Park. The walk-a-thon is being spon­ sored by the La Leche League of McHenry-Pox Lake area. The walk is a very scenic three-mile hike through beautiful woods along grassy pathways. FamiHes are invited to bring a bag lunch to eat after the walk while enjoying the park, people and the prizes. All donors will be eligible for a giveaway of family-centered gifts, which have been donated'by many local merchants. There will be a prize for the family or individual whobrings in the most money for the group. La Leche League was founded in 1956 by a group of mothers who had successfully nursed their babies and wanted to help others who wanted to nurse their babies too. They felt the best way to do' this was mother-to- mother help. Since then, the league has grown and has over 13.000 leaders in the U.S.. Canada and 48 other countries around the world. LaLeache League's motto is good mothering through breastfeeding. The proceeds from the walk-a- thon will be used to continue the many services of the local group, which includes free information to doctors and hospitals, 24-hour telephone help to mothers in need, training and education of leaders and a contribution to La Leche League International to enable them to continue helping mothers in other countries. \ • Anyone interested in the walk, or anyone interested in pledging a donation should contact the walk-a- thon's chairperson Mrjk. The award-winning photos fere on display for the next two weeks on the walls of the lower floor hallways in MCC's main building, along with the best photos and portfolios of the summer session as voted by photography students. Each year more than 6,000 Rotary- sponsored youth exhange students cross international foundries to broaden their knowledge of other people. Currently, Ian Belton of Perth, Australia, is living with McHenry Rotarian Michael Low, while local " students Roberta Oren and Lisa Hartigaiv are living with Rotarians in Port Oviejo, Ecuador and Sao Paulo. Brazil. McHenry Rotarians also support the Rotary Foundation which sponsors international scholarships for young people. Since 1947, more than 14,000 Rotary scholarships have been awarded for a year's study abroad. Antiques Appraisal Day Historical Society directors have finalized plans for the third annual Antiques Appraisal Day at the museum of the McHenry County Historical Society in Union Sunday, Sept. 18, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. As in the past, this program is a fund-raiser for the society.1 Connie Blanchette, registered appraiser for over 23 years, will again provide verbal appraisals and speak about those items being ap­ praised. A member of Mid- America Antique Appraisers Association, American Cut Glass Association and the Richmond Merchants Association, Mrs. Blanchette has had a long involvement with the world of antiques. She has been on TV and radio programs discussing antiques with listeners and is widely-known in the area as an antiques lecturer, judge and teacher. Persons wishing appraisals are invited'to bring the items to the museum. Persons wishing only to hear the discussion of the appraised items are also encouraged to attend as the program is always designed to accommodate a listening audience as well. Museum viewing hours will be maintained that Sunday anda small admission cost for non-nrfembers will be charged.
