Through 1983, the new license plates will be sold over-the-counter at Springfield and Chicago facilities to vehicle owners registering newly acquired vehicles, or motorists registering in Illinois for the first time. "Beginning today, motorists with new registrations will receive the new plates," Edgar said, "with all Illinois vehicle owners to, receive them during the next three years." The new plates are the first to be issued since Illinois adopted multi- year license plates in 1978. Edgar said that extending the life of the present plates and continuing to issue multi-year plates will save Illinois taxpayers 850 million. "The new license plates are particularly significant because they are the first to be manufactured in this stat̂ in a decade," Edgar said. Macon County Rehabilitation Facilities, Inc., in Decatur, was awarded the contract to produce the first 1.6 million pairs of pates. Sixty disabled employees at the plant produce 20,000 sets of plates each day. The new license plates will be issued according to a schedule based on the first character of the motorist's current plates: New registrations will be issued in 1983: If current plates begin with A Number, new (dates will be issued in 1964: Letters A-M, 1985: Letters N-Z, 1986.
