INVASION OF FLEAS Being a strong supporter of Wonder Lake and bragging about our community to everyone, I had always hoped Wonder Lake could be well known for something. It finally has-made its mark. Fleas!!!! I have been told by two " vets that fleas are any commercial product. No one seems to know the reason but it is a major problem for pet owners in our area. It seems to be a vicious cycle in that the pets pick them up outside, bring them into the home where eggs are hatched in the carpeting or furniture, and then these new fleas re-infect the animal again. Several dogs have become quite ill as a result of an allergic reaction to the flea bite or to the products used to kill the fleas. Just this past week our dog had to be hospitalized for such a reaction. Barb Rizzo's Great. Dane had to be put to sleep Sept. 7 , because of an unknown ailment, but strangely enough he had something similar to hives when the illness began. Lee Lopez lost his dog in the past " " " type uncontrollable this fear at the Wonder Lake area seems to have a_ week, ef syr also, from One vet said that of ffea that can't be killed Don't give up though -- there are allergy shots that will help the scratching problem and a type of pill that can be given that will kill the flea when it bites the gnimnl We have been warned that many of the, commercial products-even the well known brands-are too harsh and should not be used. Blake sore you know how it will affect your pet before you use it all over him or you might do more damage than good like I did. SPECIAL DAYS Sept 15 will find Phil adding another cand^f to birthday cake. Also, on! day, Walli O'Brien will be hearing the birthday song being sung in her honor. Manny Berndt, a former Miss Wonder Lake and still as cute, celebrates her special day Sept. / 17. May this lead to a new dimension of happiness. BY BUS TO TEXAS A ride for 27% hours in a bus may seem to be a long difficult time, but Joanna and Heather Mentzer with their mother Dottie enjoyed it immensely. Father-husband Jim drove them to Elgin, Aug. 7, where they boarded the bus to visit the children's brother and sister in Beaumont, Tex. Two weeks were spent in Winnie, Tex, where Dottie met her three-year-old grandson Lester ana his 15-month-old brother Brian for the first time. Gramma baked a cake for Lester's third birthday, making his day a very special one. Hurricane Alisha brought heavy winds and rain to Winnie, which is about 25 miles from the heavily hit area. Power was out for 21 hours. Wind drove the rain with such force that water came through the door jams. Everything outside * was battened down, and the wondows were crisscrossed with tape to prevent breakage. The children found the storm exciting, but Dottie realized what might have happened had they been closer. The Houston Zoo was a favorite place visited. This is operated by the hospital as a place of pleasure primarily for patients, but also open, free of charge, to other visitors. The three-day-old hippopotamus baby was the attraction. Heather and Joanne would have liked to stay in Texas, but Daddy Jim and school were waiting for them at home. On the return bus trip there was an additional four-hour delay at the Chicago station from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Jim picked up his very tired three girls at Elgin Aug. 22. GOD BLESS.
