Johnsburg defeated Wauconda 13-15, 15-8, 15-9. Johnsburg edges Wauconda JOHNSBURG - The Johnsburg Skyhawks are halfway to a Northwest Suburban Conference volleyball championship. The Skyhawks, by defeating Wauconda Tuesday, have gone undefeated in the NWSC in the first round of play. Wauconda, going into Tuesday's match, was also undefeated in the NWSC. Hie Skyhawks defeated the Bulldogs 13-15,15-8 and 15-9 for a 7-0 NWSC record and 9-1 overall. "Now they all will be out to get us/' said Sharal Koenigseder, coach of the Skyhawk squad. Her squad will have to face the same teams, including Wauconda, all over again. Although now the Skyhawks are king of the hill, it wasn't an easy match against Wauconda. It took three games to shake the Bulldogs off. Wauconda jumped off to a 4-1 lead in the first game, before Johnsburg was able to get anything going. The Skyhawks tied it up at 5-5 and took the lead 6-5 on a spike by Julie Anderson against two Wauconda defenders. The Skyhawk lead was raised to 13-6. But the roof caved in for the Skyhawks. After a Wauconda timeout, the Bulldogs proceeded to score seven straight points to tie the match at 13-13. The Skyhawk collapse was finalized when Wauconda scored its ninth straight point for a 15*13 win. Koenigseder blamed the first game collapse on poor serving and passing. "We missed a lot of serves in the first game and weren't getting the pass up to the center. Koenigseder talked to her squad before the second game. Due to the success of our RED TAG SALE... Wauconda did battle back to 14- 8, but Anderson blocked a Wauconda spike for the winning point. Again the Skyhawks jumped off to the quick big lead, 11:3. But, Wauconda again came back, scoring five straight to narrow the lead to 11-8. But Johnsburg hung on for a 15-9 win. "They played too careful," explained Koenigseder on how the Skyhawks let Wauconda get back into the game again. Theresa Hauck had two aces and Anderson had four kills for the winning Skyhawks.
