Teen-aged girls frequently have problems which could rove detrimental to their bies. For example, many teen-agers don't know that smoking or drinking, in addition to damaging their own bodies, can harm the babies. Pregnant women who are smokers run a greater risk of having small babies or even premature babies--the most frequent cause of infant mortality. This, of course, is true no matter what the mother's age. If a woman smokes, she should quit as soon as she even suspects that she's pregnant. j ' % At this time, no one knows how much alcohol it takes to damage an unborn child. We do know if a pregnant woman », it can cause a whole group of defects in her child, mcluding mental retardation and facial deformities. There is a question as to whether it's the amount of alcohol the mother consumes, or' the stage of pregnancy during which she drinks that causes fetal alcohol syndrome. There seems to be some evidence that even small amounts of alcohol during critical stages of the (baby's development can result in some degree of damage. Drugs can also damage the unborn - child. When we say "drugs", we don't mean drugs such as aspirin, sleeping pills, cold remedies and other over- the-counter drugs. The pregnant woman shouldnTt take any kind of medication unless her doctor tells her to. > Teen-aged parents have numerous other problems in addition to health problems. Many of them, especially tbe girls, drop out of school. This, of course, means that many of these teen-agers never reach their full potential, and the lack of education either keeps them from obtaining employment or locks them into low-paying Jobs. The job of just being a parent is difficult for many teen-agers, especially if they haven't had good role models in their own lives. Some teen-agers become very good parents, but, for many of them, their immaturity, the absence of parents and the lack of good examples make it difficult for them to know how to go about the business of parenting. It also may be very hard on teen-agers who would like to be out having fun with friends, but can't because they have to home and take care of baby. As a result of this kind of situation, teen-agers sometimes begin to resent the child and feel hostile toward it. These young people need counseling before then* hostility erupts into abuse of the child. For these, and many otter reasons, the six state agencies involved in the new Parents Too Soon program are cooperating to give special attention to the problems and needs of teen-age parents and parents-to-be.
