The main area of responsibil i ty of Dee Budelier is to direct the nutrit ional care of patients Other responsibil i t ies include directing food purchasing, menu preparation and overall food production The major purpose of nutrit ion support of the individual and" family is assuring dietary adequacy during and after hospitalization This support consists of instructing individuals and families in the dietary needs as directed by their physician A staff of Registered Dietit ians and food production and service staff work closely to determine each individual s nutrit ional needs and then prepare appetizing and nutrit ious food to meet these needs Additional support is provided by educating individuals to assist in caring for the patient at home Working closely with each patient s nutrit ional needs during i l lness and stress is important to Mrs Budelier Good nutrit ional status speeds recovery from any i l lness and is important in maintaining health and decreasing complications, Mrs Budelier said Nutrit ion awareness has greatly increased in recent years Mrs. Budelier views a major role of the Nutrit ion Service Department as an educator of hospital patients, personnel and the community It is important for persons to understand how food enhances their physical and emotional well-being and improves their health Many educational programs are currently being offered and others are being developed Individual instruction programs include the areas of diabetes, hypertension and weight modification Group programs are periodically provided to interested community members Community education through the hospital or at community facil i t ies is very important in promoting preventive health care practices Mrs Budelier views her role and the role of the Nutrit ion Department as promoting the development of patient and community wellness through education Dee Budelier She most recently served as a consultant to the American Hospital Association on the design of its Nurse Executive Development program Mrs. Kielas has also consulted on federal reimbursement for hospice care and the effects on nursing care with the implementation of prospective reimbursement for Medicare patients „ While with the Il l inois Hospital Association, she was also ihvolved in state legislative issues which affect nursing and hospitals She was instrumental in the growth and development of the Il l inois Society for Nurse Administrator's legislative network "I have had the unique opportunity to become familiar with the current status of nursing practice in many Il l inois Hospitals," says Kielas, "and it was clear to me that Memorial Hospital and its nursing staff have had a commitment to patient care which match my own That in combination with the warm welcome I have received here at Memorial Hospital has served to confirm my decision to join the staff "Each and every hospital in this country is faced with challenges as never before. As we enter an era of l imited health care resources and a better informed public, all of us wil l be faced with taking a hard look at the way in which we have tradit ionally delivered health care to the community.
