* ¥ PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY^OCTOBER S, IMS 9eneral News Recalling those old fashion rug beaters Youth orchestra fills county school void by Kurt Begalka The McHenry County Youth Orchestra was founded in the summer of 1980 to fill a growing vend left by the elimination of orchestra training in school. Marie Ann Vos, general manager and president of the group, recalled the problem was * compounded when Crystal Lake Hign School District 155 canceled its orchestra program after Crystal Lake South School opened. MCYO draws from 15 to 20 school districts - including many pupOs from out of the county -- but still lacks basses tor a ruH orchestra, according to MCYO music director and conductor Thomas Wilson. Fewer students pursue string instruments, due in part because there is no training available at school to kindle vicious circle, Vos said. Vos acknowledged that only two school districts in McHenry County have an orchestra program -- Jacobs High School and Crystal Lake District 47. The orchestra program was phased out in Woodstock beginning in 1966, recalled C. David Pierce, Woodstock High School band director. E l e m e n t a r y o r c h e s t r a instruction stopped, and by 1970 the last of the string students graduated from WHS, Pierce said. Youngsters transferring into th? district have only one option - MCYO. MCY O is composed of several groups, three of which are divided by ability. The String R e a d i n g O r c h e s t r a i s f o r beginning players and is restricted to violins, violas, cellos and basses. Vos directs this group of 25 students, average age six through eight. Emphasis is placed on music reading skills aad ensemble technique. As the students' expertise grows, they move into toe Full Orchestra and perhaps the Chamber Orchestra. There are seven ensemble groups, three string quartets, two flute trios, a brass ensemble and a percussion ensemble. All practice Saturday mornings at Central School, From 9 a.m. until noon, the musicians are either in ensembles, sectionals or rehearsing with the entire orchestra. * There are 50 students in the Full Orchestra and slightly under half of those play in the Chamber Orchestra. Tbe typical repertoire includes music by Franz Schubert, Wolfgang Mozart and Ludwig Von Beethoven. Average age in the orcheatia is 13 or 14 and many of the students worked their way up through the program. Parents also are actively involved, but they know when to bade off. "We let our kids play baseball," Vos said. "We bite our nails, but we let them play." Auditions consisting of scales, v a short excerpt from a piece and sight reading are held m the fall and summer. Three concerts are performed each year at various locations around the county. The fall semester concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4. "Each year they're better than the year before," Wilson said. "I want to make it (the orchestra) as good an instrument as it can be. It's a very exciting group." The MCYO is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, concerts, garage sales and selling T- shirts, totebags and other booster items. Vos said the working budget is $13,500 plus another $8,400 worth of donated services and time. The money is handled through the MCYO F o u n d a t i o n a n d g o e s f o r salaries, music, liability insurance, printing and copying.
